Unless there is something badly wrong you are going to be very happy with this lens! I have the 300 F4 IS which continues to surprise me with how good it is but I find the F2.8 is quite a bit better.
I would love to have the 300 F2.8 but would have to keep my F4 as I can still carry it (JUST!) when lugging around my 600! The F4 has it's place - the 2.8 is just better!

P.S. Just looked at your gear list - your 1D4 will really shine with this lens - mine did! I think you will be pleasantly surprised by the IQ and how much you can crop and still get fairly big prints.

Life is for living, cameras are to capture it (one day I will learn how!).

I will. And I have a motocross shoot the following Sunday, so I'm excited for that.

I actually rented the 300 f/4, just to make sure that 300 was the length that suited me, and it did. I was pleasantly surprised on how sharp that lens was. But I decided on the 2.8.

I have a 1.4 II, but hear that it works well with it. I might invest in a 2x as well.

I might say more than that, but I need to be careful that my 4-year-old isn't around... :)

Well this cleaned me out but good... So I'll have to stick with the 1.4 for a while. :)
