Hello recently I sent in my sigma 70-200 ex dg hsm ii in perfect condition. Before I sent the lens into adorama I was promised no minimum than 500 dollars, well they lied. When I called them today he kept saying you will receive 500 dollars but seventy Percent. So now they are offering me 350 dollars. This is crap, don't sell to adorama but just sell on here. After i spent 4k+ dollars there I am just surprised I would get lied to like that. Email about price:

I have replied to you privately, but for other readers.....

I agree it was very badly phrased, but what the rep was saying was that it had a $500 expected re-sale value - and we usually give 70% of that value. If you are trading up to a new unit you potentially achieve more as no tax is payable on part of the value of the new item, equivalent to the sum payable on the traded item.
As I said in my email to you, I will see if the used department manager will consider a little more, in view of your disappointment -or I can ensure that your goods are returned to you, safely.

Helen, wow, thanks for your great help here!

Also, this should be a heads-up for selling to an outfit like Adorama -- make sure what the "value quoted" means -- before the markdown or after?!!

It should be common knowledge that when you trade in or sell to a retailer, you are going to get very little money.

Ever trade in a car? You can usually sell it privately for a lot more. So why do it? Convenience, for one. Guaranteed payment for another. As Helen said, reduced sales tax on the purchase of something else.

A store like Adorama, B&H, or anyone else has a lot of expenses, has to make a profit on the resale of said item, and cannot pay what a private seller is willing to pay.

If you are looking for maximum return, buy Apple stock. If you're looking to enjoy a hobby, don't even consider resale when you purchase it. It shouldn't be in the equation.

And if the time comes when you do need to sell, that's what the classified market here is for. Price it right and it will sell quickly if it's a desirable item.

Actually I asked him the lowest he was going to pay me on the phone, and in a email and he responded $500.00, wasn't asking the value of the item just him how much I would receive. Stop using false accusations until you know the whole story.

Well, not for anything, but strangers on the internet will never know the whole story. Best to just contact the store directly next time instead of blasting them in public.

Reminds me of a customer who called once looking for a part for their car

I quoted them a price , and he said " What ? $150? The place down the street told me $80! "

Me " I suggest you buy from them then"

him " Well they were out of stock".

Me " Oh , yeah , when we are out of stock they are $80 as well ".....

;)

Looking at the Adorama Used selection it seems the lens is selling used for $774 - 699 for a D and E+ condition respectively. My Math says 70% of those values is right around $500

Sounding a little more like the OP was not off base in his complaint to me ;)

It might make sense to base an assessment on the current Adorama selling price. But that doesn't work, and here's why: we have 25 - 26,000 used items in our warehouse at any time, & receive several hundred items every day for evaluation.

When we sell used items we need to try to recoup what we have paid - even though we may been storing them for weeks or months and the current used buying and selling price may have dropped due to the market being flooded with similar units following the release of a new model.
