This afternoon I had some time to kill, and thought I would do a couple ISO comparison shots between the 5dmk2 and the T2i/550. These shots are not scientific nor meant to be. The only forethought was shooting against some dark colors in a rather under-exposed way.

I'm sure most will not be surprised by these results, but I was. The first 3 shots in RAW and converted to .jpg with no post processing. The last two I did noise reduce using PSPX4.

#1. The photo ISO 6400

#2. 5Dmk2 ISO 6400 100% crop of black picture with yellow lines.

#3. T2i ISO 6400 100% crop of black picture with yellow lines.

#4. 5dmk2 ISO 6400 100% crop With Noise Reduction

#5. T2i ISO 6400 100% crop With Noise Reduction

I'm rather surprised by these results.

Sweet! Thanks for the little comparison! That 5D2 file cleaned up nicely! Also...judging by that shot, I'd say the 5D2 is as clean at 6400 as the 5Dc is at 3200 or maybe even 1600-ish...this makes me happy, since I just bought a 5D2 :D

I'm pretty much a amatuer at post processing, so I'm sure there are folks here on POTN that could do a much better job cleaning up the noise.

I think you're going to like the 5d2. The best thing I like about it is the large view-finder as well as the tonal qualities and gradiants of the photos themselves.

If anyone wants the RAW to play around with, let me know and I'll upload it.

If you convert those 5D images to black and white you would not be able to tell how noisy it is because its color noise not grainy noise! Pretty cool!

Did you have to up-res the T2i shots? There is a slight advantage to the 5D, having 21MP vs 18. Up-ressing would degrade the T2i's shot more.

Good question --

What I did was cropped an area of the original 5dmk2 image. I then cropped the same area in the T2i image. It's been a while since I put this together, but seem to remember the actual size of the crop to contain the same area as the 5dmk2 was smaller on the T2i image. So to answer your question, I don't beleive the T2i was up-scaled/res. I'm not sure that makes sense when I think about it, but PSP crop tool seemed to think the cropped area was smaller.

Thinking the same thing... Being bored is one thing, being board is a completely different thing. Isn't reading, writing and arithmetic taught any more ?

Correction...
