G'mornin' all. Yesterday I looked in my view finder and saw that the numbers to the far left were obstructed or something. Anyone encounter this before?

New one to me. Guess it would be hard to look into the VF and shine a small light in there at the same time...

Wonder if it's blocked or if a segment of the LCD crapped out...

What's strange is that I just found that if I move my eye around, at certain angles I can see all the numbers. So there has to be something in there. I just can't see anything!

Maybe?? Some 5D mirror assemblies have been known to come loose...see http://www.slashgear.com …immediate-repair-0332974/ (external link) for info about a Canon fix.

I second the guess that LCD is "crapping out" -- I've seen other similar LCD displays fail like that. The glass covering the liquid is separating. At certain angles, the LCD can still be seen. It get worse, but slowly. I'd check with Canon Service for replacement costs, but probably continue using it until it becomes unusable, before sending in for repair.

Excellent photo technique -- it ain't easy to photograph that!

The mirror fix has already been done.

melanopsin, I am siding with you here, but I really wish it wasn't the case.

Well, I opened up that area of the camera and closely inspected it all. Everything looks perfectly fine.

So I guess it has to be the LCD. This really bums me out. The camera is in brand new condition and I was hoping to sell it for a decent amount eventually to fund something newer. It only has approx 11000 clicks!

QUOTED IMAGE

Could be due to LCD components failure. I've seen 1 bar failure, but not this many.

Have a copy of the Parts Catalog? I looked through it & couldn't identify the part, but you should have no problem, having seen the part inside the camera. :) I'd ask Canon Service how much is the part...

How far in did you inspect it, did you go pass the focusing screen and Superimpose screen, I know there is a layer of plastic near the LCD strip that might have shifted, I think it acts as some sort of shielding.
