UV is a flood clearcoat that runs in-line as a 5th color. Printers actually like it because it speeds dry time to the cutter. Its usually very cheap to free. There is no spot UV I've ever heard done. Spot gloss varnish is an extra film and plate and can either be either in-line (effect is only OK) or as a dry trap (meaning they take it off press for a bit while the ink dries, then run the varnish on dry ink). The advantage to dry trap is the varnish sits on top of the ink rather than settling in. The effect is MUCH more dramatic and worth the price. In-line spot varnish is maybe 30% as effective, and much cheaper. Be sure to spec a dull coated paper for the best spot gloss contrast. lol where to begin... mcluckie wrote in post #8743800 Judging from your temporary cards, I'd suggest hiring a designer so you don't waste your money. The point of what I did wasn't to be fancy and obfuscate what really mattered. I wanted my name and URL, that's it. I also wanted to keep the font size as large as possible, not something you can do when you start cluttering it up with verbiage or "artsy" design on 20x30mm. I've seen your card and, frankly, your self-proclaimed arrogance is spot-on.

All I know is that when I finally design one it’s going to incorporate spot glossing/UV, which isn’t exactly cheap considering 500 is the minimum order qty, so I don’t want to rush it. For now, this’ll do. Keeping them in a film canister protects them and makes dispensing them quite easy. Stashing a few in your wallet works equally well. Those are kind of fun. Tiffany

Sales talk. UV looks like a gloss varnish, but isn't. I stand corrected if they offer spot UV - I've never seen it. Its usually applied with no film, just flooded onto the blanket. Since there's no plate, etc., most big 4-6 color printers I've used give it (to me at least) free. I'm well aware that in order for the spot glossing to stand out the card needs to be matte. Gloss on gloss just doesn't cut it. The above printers wouldn't even let you do that i bet. Some people aren't aware. Just like some people bold all the type; then nothing is bolder than anything else. I'm sure the printer wold print whatever you wanted; a good one would recommend something else, like I was trying to do. The point of what I did wasn't to be fancy and obfuscate what really mattered Simple is good. Type aligned on some angle may not be; grids are always a nice place to start, maybe aligning something off something else. Design is a type problem where the solution is dependant upon the text needed. Yeah, I'm arrogant; I've been designing Fortune 500 company identity programs for 20 years. Granted, that doesn't make me good, but maybe some awards do. Bad type pisses me off, just like a bad photo should piss you off. If you want to redesign mine for me go right ahead. If you want to cry or start a bar fight, lets do it in PM and not clog up the post. People shouldn't be in a creative field if they can't take a crit without saying "oh, yeah, yours is worse." I implied your DESIGN wasn't good, I didn't say YOU were a jerk. Get the difference... multidisciplinary visual guy, professor of visual art, irresponsible and salty.
