That's really up to you on how many flashes you want to use. If you're starting out, I suggest 1 flash shot through a softbox/umbrella. Softbox will control the spill of the light better, so maybe that's the way to go. All up to you. Hey, I would even play with the flash bare to just see how it works.

Since the photo posted is not yours, include a link to the photo on its website.

Number of lights and distance is totally dependent upon the amount of power of the light(s), along with your f/stop and ISO.

For example, a single 580EX could illuminate the AOV of a 50mm 'normal' lens (on FF) with a GN130 at ISO 100, or 23' at f/5.6; but change to ISO 1600, and you have 185' at f/2.8.

If you increase number of lights to two 580EX, they would illuminate AOV of 'normal' lens with GN180 at ISO 100 or 32' at f/5.6, or change to ISO 1600 and have 262' at f/2.8

I removed the [IMG] tags because I suspect that it's not your image & IMAGE POSTING RULES don't allow you to post an image that's not yours without permission & proper attribution.

And some of the best "night shots" I've seen were taken before it's totally dark while there's still some light left in the sky. You don't need much, but you need some.
