Hey guys, new to the forum and new to photography here.

Saving up for an entry level SLR but for the mean time I picked up a EOS 10D to get my feet wet in the SLR world. I've just had point and shoots all my life.

When I got it the first thing I did was order one of those Extreme SD to CF II card adapters. Since I have dozens and dozens of SD cards but only one CF card which is 32mb and it was the one I bought for my first digital camera back in 2002.

I received the adapter but I just cant get the 10D to read it.
It gives me the Err CF message. I have tried all sorts of SD cards and none seem to work. From 128mb regular to 8GB Ultra SDHC.

Before I bought the adapter I had looked online and found a thread stating someone was using it with sucess in their 10D.

I have tried formatting the sub-2GB cards in Fat16 and Fat32, still get the error. Tried formatting it in the camera but it will only list 3.8mb no matter what SD card I use. And if I try to format it I get Err 99.

The adapter itself seems to work fine on my computer, with the only CF card I have the camera will work fine. I have it updated to the newest firmware.

If anyone has any clue how to get the adapter to work I would really appreciate it.

Many of the currently available SD-CF adapters are UDMA...perhaps your 10D is not compatible for that reason.

I had looked that up actually, are adapters backward compatible or only the cards?

thanks for the quick response!

Supposedly non-UDMA cameras can run with UDMA memory at the slower non-UDMA rates.

But other areas seem a bit uncertain...with the EyeFi wireless, the EyeFi X2 is UDMA and it works in newer bodies only when used in a UDMA adapter. Getting it to work in an older body seems to be fraught with problems. If non-UDMA cameras can run with UDMA memory at the slower non-UDMA rates, why not with the EyeFi X2 ?!

10D won't take over a 2 GB card IIRC; it has to be something that can be formatted in FAT16. So forget SDHC cards (or adapters that take SDHC cards). Really, just get a new CF card for it (2 GB or smaller).

I don't know why I over complicate things sometimes.
Gonna go pick up a couple of 2GB cards at best buy tomorrow.

Thanks for all the info!
