My g/f's laptop is on its last leg and mine is not far behind. We just purchased LR4 and there is no way the laptops will handle LR4. I am not impressed with the available laptops considering the prices, so I am thinking about building a tower pc.

The goal is to continue using the pc's at the couch in our living room to pp as we have with our laptops for the past few years. We are thinking the towers will go on each side of the couch under the end tables, wireless keyboard / mouse, and each have monitors that we will bring out each time we are to edit photos.

Before we go spending $2,000+ on two tower setups (like I am going to sit next to her on LR2 :p I want to make sure I am being reasonable with using a "desktop" setup in such a way. I have not used a desktop in over 10 years and have never used a wireless keyboard or mouse. Are such wireless devices sufficient for using with photo editing software like PS where you need 100% mouse accuracy? The tower will be within 2-3 feet but the less wires we have to deal with the better.

Am I missing anything or should this be a pretty smooth setup from the comfort of the couch?

Thanks for any feedback!

Sounds like a nice set up, no I am no expert at this either, but I say get a new glass coffee table and mount the monitors under the table at a slight angle (I have seen this sort of set up at banks, service stations and such where the monitor is mounted in the counter top :D

I know I know not worth it, but it would be cool.

Wireless mice and keyboards are fine; They even make 'couch mouse' models now. What else will you be doing with the computer that you need a tower over a laptop? I'd probably go with a decent laptop and then dock it to your couch/workstation with all the wireless stuff.

I know they're spendy, but have you looked at the Wacom tablet/monitors? The 21" is just under $2K though, but it'd be so nice compared to working a keyboard and mouse on your lap and the couch.

I guess I should have commented on the wireless mouse and keyboard, I use them all day every day at home and at work. Work I do 3D drafting and the mouse is spot on, at home for photo editing I found a mouse with a cord got in the way so I switched to wireless and cant tell the difference.

That would be cool, but I don't think looking down at a monitor would be the best thing for the body / neck. Plus with editing pics where IQ is crucial looking through glass may degrade IQ.

That Wacom monitor looks nice, but definitely out of the budget range considering I would need 2. Not to mention we plan to both purchase new 5DMIII's early next year

The new pc's will be strictly for pp'n / uploading those pics to the web. The laptops will serve as storage to upload files while on vacation and web surfing. We have purchased 4 laptops in 6 years and fed up with how slow and obsolete they become. By building our own pc, we can expand and R&R parts as time goes on.

Thank you for the feedback! Just what I was hoping to hear :-)

Do you both normaly PP at the same time? You may find you could get away with one new computer and a laptop. I am sure its hard with two shooters in the house.

Yes, shoot & pp together 98% of the time

Actually, it works out quite well. Unlike most significant others, she supports / understands spending $975 on a tripod

Lucky you, guess you need two systems. I don't see why it would not work.
