Took a ride down to the Salton Sea on Saturday. The migration is clearly picking up! The back field where the Snow Geese go had a couple thousand geese in it 2 weeks ago. This past weekend, it looked like much, much, more than that. But, for some reason, this year they're roosting in the field, instead of on the pond. That's a bummer of a deal, because there's no way to get behind them to shoot the sunset. Only a small handful went into the pond for me just before sunset.
To calculate how many geese there are - -multiply this pic by 4 or 5x. I tried to do a pano, and it took 4 or 5 shots from left to right to capture the whole field. In some sections, the geese are up front and there was a whole other row in the back by the trees. The pic below is a single row shot.
