gmwinder, Tofin, JT, AB8ND, rs2sensen, & wardge are all from there.

And Kris K and I are just a little further West--On the lakeshore.

Hi. I joined the forum a while back but have not been active. I'd like to change that so after finding this thread, I thought I'd let everyone know that I too and from MI. I live in north-central Oakland County, Brandon Township, near Ortonville.

So anyone planning to go down to the Red Bull Air Race the last weekend of the month? www.redbullairrace.com (external link)

I'm planning to go and am thinking about sitting on the Windsor side should make for some cool pictures with the Detroit skyline in the background.

Yep! Will be there in Zone 1 on Sunday for the race.

I'm headed to Grand Rapids in about 2 weeks, can anybody recommend any spots I should visit?

It depends on what you are looking to get shots of really...

  • Reed's Lake in East Grand Rapids is nice for nature shots, sailboats, landscape, etc.
  • Frederick Meijer Gardens is also quite nice.
  • There's a lot of construction going on in downtown Grand Rapids (cranes, etc), so if that's your thing... Night pictures of the city down at the Grand River can be fun as well.
  • John Ball Park Zoo
  • The lakeshore (Grand Haven, Holland, Saugatuck) would be good places to visit if you are interested in beach photos/lighthouses/sunsets, etc.
Just a few I can think of off the top of my head... I am sure that others will have more ideas than me :)

Any tips for the Redbull Races this up coming weekend? I'll be using a Canon 1D and a Sigma 100-300 F4 EX DG. Should I manually focus, I'm not sure how quick this lens tracks , never panned with it before. I'll be on the Windsor side, Zone 5 on Saturday and Zone 6 on Raceday.

Anyone else going from Windsor?

It's tough to find the right combination of sharp shots & prop blur. Sometimes it helps to practice with traffic for a warm up before the shoot. Marauder61 always seems to get it right. (Pro trick: Or maybe he just shows us the great ones?) :D

I scored media access to the air races. I'm going to try to be down there as much as time allows between work and school.

Plan on bringing my XT w/ 18-50mm f/2.8, and my 40D with 70-200mm f/4L (and possibly a TC).

If I could afford it, I'd be picking up a 35mm f/2.0 for MMA on saturday and a nice long prime for the air races. Guess I may have to settle on a 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III for the reach.. ah well.

I shoot for a website that covers the social scene for Detroit, my boss sent them a request on my behalf (almost out of boredom, just to see if it'd work).

They bit, and we're in! Yes, I know.. huge luck-out. I'm hoping to push my gear to the limits on this one. I'm down at Wayne State for class thursday/friday, and I have to shoot MMA on Saturday night, so that kinda limits the time I can be down there to time after class, most of Saturday, and all of Sunday.

Has anyone started thinking about getting tickets to the UPBA Gold Cup race on the Detroit River this year??? July 11-13? It might be an opportunity for a POTN get-together... Plus I don't think you'll get harassed for bringing pro gear in. Thoughts????

Speaking of a get together. Thunder over Michigan is August 9th and 10th. The line up of aircraft looks like it will be pretty good. And the Wilson Barn car show in Livonia is June 8th. If anyone is interested let me know.

I wish I could take a 2nd shooter, but we only put in for a single pass. Probably should have asked for a +1 or +2.. next year maybe.

We're going to throw a request towards the UPBA, gonna keep my fingers crossed.

I totally forgot about the Thunder over MI. I've always wanted to make it out there to shoot that. Maybe this year finally.
