Geo-Tagging Device

I'm looking for a geo-tagging device for my Canon 5D2. I see a few different models, but would like some recommendations from some users.

Also ... I am looking for a recommendation on how to digitally (verbally) document where the picture or group of pictures were taken. At the time I take the pictures, I know where I am and what I am taking. But ... when I get home from a vacation (after taking 7,000 to 8,000 pictures), I am a lost a lot of times as to where or what the picture is.

It would be nice if cameras, CF cards, or even geo-tagging devices that have digital taping capabilities.

Any input or ideas would be appreciated.

I use a geotagging app on my phone that syncs with EXIF data once I get home... as for descriptions that I want to remember... I carry a small notebook. I write down image numbers and what's going on/what I want to remember.

Which app syncs the EXIF data? I to used a small notebook. I did start to leave voice notes on my smartphone but since I recently acquired my 7D I was considering a quick flip to video mode for a brief description of an event or location before, during or after a group of shots. I have yet to try this in the real world but I will give it a shot.

I use Geotag Photos Pro ... https://play.google.com …kLmdlb3RhZ3Bob3Rvc3BybyJd (external link) ... set the time on your camera same to the time on the app... let the program run while you're out shooting... when you get home point the program to your folder full of raw files and it puts the location in the EXIF based on the time stamp.

Use your iPhone (with location service turned on) to make at least one photo at each location. Use the time and date both sets of photos to set the location in the DSLR files.

I was at the Google Play store and found that app. Apparently you really need to keep your time synced on both devices. Not a problem will download it and give it the 30 test. Thanks.

You can use Lightroom 4 for geotagging from a track file (any gps with logging feature, or you Iphone with the free myTracks app). Or before Lightroom 4, I was using geosetter (external link) (Windows).

Canon 1D series can record a voice memo attached to the picture.

I use GPS Stone on my iPhone 3GS to create the .gpx file, and then I sync the data in LR4.

I got fed up with my iPhone's battery dying after just a few hours, and it wasn't very good at keeping a signal. So I bought a BGT-31. Not very cheap but will run for 70 hours continuously on a single charge and will carry on tracking in a pouch, in a bag, in a seat-pocket, in a bus.

I wanted to get a GP-E3 for use with a couple of our camera bodies....but it seems as it is another product with a mystery availability date.

I just got a garmin etrex 30 to do this with. It is a very well rounded unit that is useful for just about any outdoor activity, on or offroad. Color display, 30 hour battery life, water/dust/crush-proof, birds-eye aerials, custom mapping, plenty of fitness features, ect. So far I am really loving having it around. I don't have LR4 yet, but I am just stock piling the gpx files for when I do.

Wintec G-Ray 201. (external link)

The size of a quarter, 10 hr battery rechargable. It marks locations by time code. Set your camera's clock to the local time or GMT. Upload photos at home to your computer. Use Geobabel (free software) to lock your photos to the Wintec log long/lat coordinates via time codes. Use Geosetter (free software) to locate the coordinates of each shot on Google Maps.

Contribute to the two software sites, the apps are fantastic. Have used the system for two years, many trips.
