My apologies for bringing up filter questions that have surely been beaten to death. I've been reading old threads and wound up with scrambled eggs for brains. I've lost track of seemingly important details from brand to brand and model to model.

From what I have gathered, the B+W Kaesemann is a very good choice for a CPL. I'm unclear on 2 things. First, I thought I read somewhere that a lens cap won't fit with this particular brand/model. That just doesn't sound right to me. Is this the case with only the slim model or am I confused? Secondly, I have a Canon 10-22 that I'll probably play with using this filter even though I understand that things may be goofy using a CPL on an ultra wide angle lens. With the B+W, would going slim be necessary if I use it on this lens?

$ is a limiting factor. $200 is out of the question unless retailers start taking IOUs that won't be made good. I see no point in buying something of so-so quality as I'll want something better eventually. Any feedback is greatly appreciated as usual.

Most likely if it is a slim, then no cap can put on the end.

Same thing with my slim cpl from heliopan. A beauty of a cpl, but a bother as you can't put a cap on.

If you payed good money for the lens, you should look for some very good filters too. BW, helipan and hoya are great ones..

I don't have the Kaesemann, but I do have the B+W MRC filter (and the 10-22). I know I asked a salesperson at B&H about this and they couldn't answer correctly.

But, the 10-22 does not need a slim filter, even at 10mm. Even with a semi-slim UV filter (that still has front threads) and a regular B+W MRC polarizer stacked on top you don't get vignetting until about 12mm, so there really is plenty of clearance for a regular filter.

So if you do get a filter with front threads, you'd be able to stack a regular ND filter on it as well and get pretty wide, and be able to use the lens cap.

Oh and I think the B&W MRC filter ($128) is excellent. You can see my gear and my main interest is wide 'landscapes' so I'm definitely concerned about both IQ and flare and the MRC has not disappointed. I do also have a cheap ($40) B&W linear polarizer and it is pretty nasty with regards to flare (loses contrast quickly). The Kaesemann is supposed to be even better I think and I see it for about $156 at Adorama and B&H, but I have no idea if it is worth the extra $30 or not.

Slim version does not have front threads so lens cap will not fit. It comes its own front cap but it is pretty loose and comes off easily.

77mm Kaesemann XS-Pro Circular Polarizer MRC Nano Filter

I just got it for my 10-22 from B+H and it has threads for a lens cap. You pay for it but it's worth it. I use my lens cap with it all the time.

EDIT: The older slim filters couldn't hold a lens cap and came with a plastic cup like thing that slipped over it. I didn't like it at all.

This is old info as noted above. The B+W F-Pro 5mm and newer XS-Pro nano 3mm slim filters do have front filters threads that accept an OEM factory lens cap.

Thanks everybody! I'll order up the Kaesemann MRC CPL this evening. Maxsaver.net has it for $137.90 which seems extremely reasonable compared to other retailers.
