I am planning a trip to Alaska this September. I currently own a 7d which will be great for most of what I do. I am thinking of renting a backup camera just in case. I would like to take the 5d II. Would there be a great deal to learn with a 5d II or would it be a fairly easy transition between the two bodies? I would like to use the 5d II for landscape shots and the 7d for wildlife. I have a 17-40 I could use on the 5d. Thanks in advance for your help.

There are minor differences in terms of menus (custom functions) and a few button layout differences, but they are set up pretty similarly. The 7D has a more functional setup in some respects IMO because it's newer, but I wouldn't say there's a great deal to learn.

Thanks for your quick response. I was hoping that would be the situation. This will give me a good chance to try out one and see if I might be interested in buying one later.

If you're used to your 7D, a 5D2 will be easy to use! :)

I agree with above; if anything the 5DII is easier to use than the 7D.

The 5D3 is even more like the 7D. If the 5D2 and 3 are available, rent the latter.

It is but a lot more money and since I was mainly looking at using it for landscapes I thought the II might be fine.
