Nice job of capturing the blacks in his face without losing the detail around his eyes and nose.
A bit is lost under his nose and on his neck...but i don't think that matters.

What I found that works, is to use an external flash with a diffuser, or have him stand so that he is facing the sun. Shoot in RAW, and go from there. Can usually get a pretty good pic of a black dog that way if you are lucky. Great composure on this shot, though I would've unhooked the leash (if hes good off leash like my dog)

I'm sure Tmoore can make that leash go away too.
Nice composition of a cool dog, but yeah a little more light would help.

Thanks, I always shoot RAW, and this was during the "golden hour" I had the sun on his left side but agree a reflector or fill flash on the right side would have helped a lot.

From experiance, there really is no "golden hour" for dog photography. When I'm taking pictures of my dog, its always just as hard to get a good shot, no matter where the sun is. Perhaps that is partly to blame on my Xti though? I do notice a bit of an improvement when using my friends Xsi and I really cant wait to get my 60D and try with that.

I like the angle and the fact that the dog in "up front" in this image.
