At a horse event today and the main photo person hired a few other photographers to help shoot the event. What is a ballpark figure on what they make per day? I know it depends on the event, but 8-10 hours in the hot sun then PP, if any?

An acquaintance who helped shoot at Devon got. $250 and lunch. That was roughly 12 hours.

I've done events (2 day) in Area V for $200.

I don't do that anymore. Not enough!

I am in a similar circumstance....I was just approached by another photography studio to second shoot some weddings and events. All I have to do is shoot and hand over the memory cards at the end of the night....no PP work or dealing with the end customers. We agreed to a flat day rate of $600 plus gas for any out of town events.....I felt this was a fair offer as a second shooter. I've also been offered as little as $10 an hour to assist/second shoot events....that's just not worth it IMO and I turn those offers down.
A lot is going to depend on how profitable the event is for the main photographer along with your experience level at shooting these events. If they are making a lot of money from the event and the value that you add will help them make a lot more money, then you should expect to be paid well. On the other hand, if there isn't much money being spent on the photography, then you'll probably find that isn't worth it.

I hire other freelancers on a regular basis. Pay varies depending on the scope of the gig, how much I can charge, and how much I need someone. The freelancers can chose to accept or pass on the gig.

Good luck.

For those that hire "2nd shooters", how do you go about doing this? I would love even for one wedding or shoot to just follow and help setup and all that just to learn but I am in a small town and I don't know where to look.

Figure out what you expect to make as a day rate, Ive done gigs fro $200.00 upto $300.00 for a day rate with NO pp involved at all. My day rate includes up to ten hours after that its at least $30.00 per hour from there on. I dont know your equipment or experience so I cant speak to that but if your demanding these rates you really should have a good grasp on your skilz.

Second shooters aren't hired so they can learn. They're competent photographers in their own right who are hired to add coverage of equal quality.

I guess the rates vary. I shoot for on occasion for an international sports event photography business at a rate of $350 per half day (up to 4 hours). No PP required, just shoot, hand in the cards and walk away. Big emphasis on getting a high number of quality photos though.

I agree....the rates do vary tremendously depending on the situation. I've found that there are lots of people who will try to "lowball"....and I'm guessing that's mainly because they simply don't have the budget but there are others who do offer a fair deal. From my perspective, if I'm hiring another photographer to help me out, I want to pay him/her as much as the market will bear because I know just how tough it can be in the business. I really appreciate it when other photography studios do the same for me :)

I need to move back to Ohio, If you guys are getting these rates power to you. Although I dont belive $300. for a day rate would be considered low balling really. But at $600. per day maybe it is.lol...
