Composite like in "I replaced the original background with a better one".
My two original pics had a background that was rather blah...

The same day, and more or less from the same point of view, I had taken a gorgeous reddish tree as a blurred background with the idea that it could be useful someday.

So I gave it a try using One on One Perfect Layer / Perfect Mask.

The Cardinal seems OK to me, although maybe I should have darkened the background layer a bit; the Starling looks a bit artificial IMO.

Interested by inputs on two levels: the sheer quality of the resulting pictures, and more philosophical considerations based on "should we allow ourselves such extreme post processing deeds as completely replacing the background of an animal pic, or should we stick to what nature and our choice placement provided us with, so as to remain as "natural" or "truthful" as possible?" - (Personally I never hesitate to clone out a disturbing detail to improve a picture, but this is rather more radical, isn't it?).
Thanks for looking, and for any comments.

I do this sort of thing on occasion for my pictures that I sell. Like I sometimes make my own backgrounds for photos of fish. I don't try to fool people, it is obvious most times and I do mark them as digital collage. Most people do except this sort of thing, but some people hate it and think they are being fooled.

Well... somewhere I can understand that - at least if it's not clearly explained. If it's clear from the get go, no one is fooled - but I can understand some would only appreciate "natural" pictures (although darkening a sky in post to make it more dramatic is of the same order - that's not what you saw when you took the picture either...).

Clever-looks like they're at a carnival or the Mardi Gras!

I swear I did not tweak the colors of the background, it came as seen here - but yes, maybe it's a tad too much; and the strong contrast of the Starling with the BG possibly is what makes it appear artificial / fake.
