some things to think about...

First off, DO NOT get rid of your flash. You will regret it, I assure you. Bounced flash pictures with the G6 will look MUCH better than direct flash with the XT.

Second, and please don't take this the wrong way, but if you need that $150 for the flash you might rethink the SLR route. Lenses are expensive and I can guarantee you won't be happy with the kit lens for long. The 50/1.8 is a great lens and will show you what the camera can do but soon you will want a good quality zoom which will set you back at least $400.

Third, the kit lens isn't as good as the lens on your G6. Not only is it much slower (f/3.5-5.6 vs. f/2.0-3.0 on your G6,) but it's of lower optical quality as well.

Fourth, the XT being a DSLR will apply less processing to your pictures than the G6 does. I can absolutely guarantee that when you look at the initial pictures from the camera you will be disappointed. It's a different world. If you don't like post processing, don't buy an SLR.

Finally, carrying an SLR around is a lot different than carrying an all-in-one like your G6. It's a pain to be quite honest. The picture quality makes it worth it but it's a pain.

Please think hard about these things before you lay your money down...

Todd

Is that a fact you have found out by comparing the two or an assumption you make based on others opinion ??? Just curious.

All my images with my 20D were A LOT better straight out of the camera(in large JPG mode) than my images from my G2 after RAW, combined conversion, levels, USM, ... so I'd doubt your statement.

And that f/2.0 vs. f/3.5 advantage (less than 1 full stop) gets offset very fast by the difference in usable ISO between 200 (you can't really use 400) and 1600...

But maybe my copy of the kit lens is better than yours...

Best regards,
Andy

some cameras, some lenses,
and still a lot of things to learn...
(so post processing examples on my images are welcome :D)

Thanks for your reply Todd.

The first point about the flash, it is not about the money exactly, here is why. I was looking to trade up and "gain" alot in terms of camera capabilities and in my own words "compactness". Let me explain, even though I think I already stated most of this in my other posts. The Rebel I figured would give me things the G6 doesn't. higher ISO, no shutter lag, faster focusing, and the ability to add lens later, probably a year or more from now ect......As far as being more compact. The G6 with the 420ex attached is in my opinion more bulky than a Rebel by itself. That is why I was concerned if the I would be content without the external flash and the using the current lens kit that come with it. And to be able to sell all I had now G6, lens adapter, 420ex on ebay, then look for some awesome deal with coupons from Dell, for example, or other online retailer for a minimal amount, it seemed if all these things lined up and my questions and concerns were satisfied it would be worth it.

But it appears I may be too optimistic about pricing, and even more of a concern is my level of satisfaction with the Rebel as is. I'm basically taking family pics, kids, some sports they are involved in, dance recitals, ect....

I was just trying to get my head around if it would be a good move.

Ok, let me further complicate things, (for me that is) lol.

Went into Staples this weekend, and went over to the digital cameras, looked at a silver Rebel XT, yuk! I know the G6 is silver, but I'd have to have the Black one! Next to it is this nice expensive looking black slr Nikon 50D. WOW! It felt so nice. Now I really don't know that much about the camera itself. But the pricing online seems to where I could make that "transition" I posted about in this thread. I still love my G6 and have no regrets, but I guess I got this itch that needs scratched, either now or at least in the near future

Can I retract my last post??

The 50D does feel and look good, but just read about it on dpreview and the old Rebel and the Rebel XT seems to blow it away in picture quality. Oh well..............
