Greetings,

I am looking for travel/tourism/visiting/photography tips for Puerto Rico. It will be my first time on business, and I will be visiting twice this coming month (both for a week each). Is there anything I need to know regarding photography conduct, behavior, things I shouldn't photograph or do, etcetera?

Would it be okay to carry my photography backpack with me (has all my lens and other equipment)?

Where are you headed? San Juan? We went to Puerto Rico for a week in February and felt totally comfortable carrying my gear around Old San Juan, there were Policia everywhere! We stayed at a resort in Rio Grande and had some great experiences in the rain forest. San Juan itself has some rough patches and like any big city you need to be smart about where you go and not looking like a tourist (target).

If you've got questions ask away, we had a ball there, the locals were very, very friendly and we'll definitely be making another trip.

Here are a couple of my favorite shots from Old San Juan:

I found historic San Juan safe and plenty of photo ops (street life, old forts, restaurants, etc.)

Where are you going? If its just San Juan or other touristy spots then don't worry. Its no more dangerous then any other big city. I spent two weeks traveling all around Puerto Rico. (with a local!) in some backwoods places. At first I was sketched out about busting out a nice camera but quickly got over it. Having a local that spoke Spanish with a huge help.

I brought a 5D, 24-105 and a 70-200 F4 LIS. I took some gorgeous one of a kind pictures......that my wife somehow deleted trying to copy them to a DVD....I am still bitter about that.... That is why I don't let her touch my files on the Mac anymore.....

The only thing you should worry about is heat and humidity. protect your camera from moisture and allow time for condensation to evaporate after coming out of airconditioning. If you only take one body and something goes wrong (it happened to me--mirror fell off in 5D) there is a best buy in San Juan. Prices are higher on the island.

Digitizing in a snap reflective glory
That will forever tell our imaged story.
