I would look to get a little more directional light going. It would give it a little more drama and dimension. I really like the color, processing and exposure.

Nice shots. However, they might just be more effective if processed in the faded Kodachrome look or B&W reminiscent of the 1940's...

That's one part of the inspiration behind these Jay. Like I said on facebook...think "Technicolor, in HD" with a splash of tonemaping tossed in. Personally, I'm still not satisfied with the results, but I'm heading the right direction I think. There's a delicate balance going on between color saturation, dynamic range and over-all exposure. Think I might revisit the first one tonight.

Thanks.

If you really study those 4x5s, you'll see that the "look" is entirely dependent on the lighting...

Pretty broad in front with quite harsh back/rim lighting. I have no doubt that Hollywood was involved with at least the factory shots for the War Department and they were probably lit with hot lights like you'd find on a movie set. Remember that this was probably ASA 8 film!

You used a ringlight or beauty dish on yours, right?

Yeah, I remember discussing those photos with someone once. He decided most were very staged and used a LOT of lighting. The colors are what I'm trying to draw on a bit. Tone and light is coming from a different source of inspiration.

Yes, these were lit with a ARB800 ring light...hung a vagabond around my neck and it ended up being a pretty nice run and gun setup. Once you get the power setting and distance down it's very effecient. Think I got more than a dozen guys in less than 5 minutes. Just trying to get to my final vision for the processing. I like the light and the tone map...just not happy with the color yet.
