I don't know where else to turn......please help the uninformed! My Canon D50 in creative mode is focusing on one sole AF point. I think by accident I "assigned" the camera to do this. Using the manual, I've been able to move it round the 9 points......but I want it back to the default setting that uses the "best AF point" based on the camera's algorithms.

You will be rewarded knowing you helped a helpless (or hapless) amatuer.

Welcome to POTN.

Actually, it looks like your camera is trying to help you use the best settings. ;) Single point AF is really the best choice because then you will be able to choose where YOU want the optimum focus rather than letting the camera make the decision and probably guess wrong. The camera's algorithm makes the choice based on closest object having a sharp high contrast edge -- that may or may not be what you want.

I am not very familiar with the menu on the Canon 50D, but the various models are basically the same. There should be a menu item that lets you choose between auto and manual AF. Choose auto and it will give you what you are wanting to use.

Someone will be along shortly to give you a better answer to your question.

If memory serves right, press and release (with your right thumb) the right most button at the top right corner at the back of your 50D. Then press and release the joystick (straight down, not tilting in any direction) located near the big LCD screen's top right corner. That should put the camera back to using all AF points with Artificial Intellegent.

Yes, top right button, look in viewfinder, using wheel behind shutter button, roll it until all A/F points are lit, then press shutter button to confirm...

You may want to clear all camera setting if you feel there are other things that you have set inadvertently. On the menu screen - third tab from the right - clear settings- "clear all camera settings". It's on page 45.
