Hi Pamela.

Welcome back to photography. :)
I took a long break and just got back to photography 6 months ago. Things have evolved much since i got my 20D. It took me weeks to get up to speed. lol
Well, if i were in your shoes, i'll pick either 60D or a slightly more expensive 5DMk2. Both are great for landscape and family photos. And they work well with the lens you have and any L lens, and they have video feature too. You would be happy with either. :)

What about even a 5D classic? Cheaper body which means more money for new glass :D

5DMK2 with 24-105 kit currently $2898 at multiple retailers. That outfit fits your needs but that is not exactly pocket money.

The 60D is $899 and the cheapest L lens is the 70-200mm f/4L non IS at $709 - that is too long for most landscape photos. The 17-40mm f/4L is $779 but you would probably be happier with a 17-50/55 f/2.8 lens, they are not "L" but still excellent lenses. They cost from just under $700 to nearly $1,100.

Simple: Spend $2898 and have a top of the line outfit or $1,600 and have an extremely good outfit without having an L lens.

Warning! The L virus gets expensive and the only treatment is buy another lens.

I'm wanting to get back into photography and jump into doing it as a side business. I'm a web and graphic designer and although I enjoy that in general... I find more joy in photography and editing photos. I have a lot to relearn and more to learn but I'm ready. LOL

I have the Canon 20D right now and it still works great for now. But down the road in the near year... if you were to upgrade to another camera... which one would you go to? OK..I know if money is no issue...get top of the line. LOL But if money is a bit of an issue and you want to compare value versus cost.... which canon would you choose?

I'm looking to get some L glass. Which do you recommend. I love landscapes but also love real life photos of family/children.

Thanks for any opinions :)

you need to put a $$ budget otherwise you're going to get recommendations all over the place. But if it's in the thousands then a nice 5DmkII thru the CLP program paired with a L lens will get you nice family pics

Thank you everyone for the suggestions. I appreciate it and it's helpful!

watt100.... I understand what you're saying. There is a wide range. I tend to research different price ranges and see what's best for the money. I'm sure top of the line everything you can't go wrong but is costly. If there isn't a cheaper option that's at least comparable then I'd have to figure out where to get the money. LOL

If you're going to use it for business, you need the best tools.
Start with the 5DIII + 24-104L kit and go from there.

Think new Canon lenses are overpriced? Lots (and lots) of data will set you free!

I also have had the 20D for a long time, but really depends on what you need it for. I would also consider a T2i. i did a bit of research as well, and If you don't shoot lightening quick focus like sports or wildlife, it should be great, and it takes really fine images as well. Its also less money, and just as good as the 60D in a lot of respects.
The D series pretty much went away from what the enthusiast mode that the earlier 10-40D had. But that 20D is still one heck of a camera, and the nice part is you don't get the huge file sizes that the newer ones have.

60D would suit you just fine. You don't need a 5D to take great pictures. I would definitely stay away from the 5D classic for landscapes if you already have a 20D. Something with live view and other more modern functions would benefit you more. Kit yourself out with a 10-22, tamron or sigma 17-50, and a 70-200, and you're set for landscapes and family/kids (as far as lenses and body go) for under $3k.

The 60D would be a great choice. I have had mine for 1.5 years, and it has never failed me. The Canon 15-85 IS lens is also a great choice to go with it. I take about 85% of my shots with it.

Thanks everyone.... gives me some ideas to research. I love the L glass series and want one in the worst way. LOL I do love my 20D. It's been great for me and will keep it as back-up.

Anyone in Central Florida that has an L glass out there they want to get rid of and has a car they need work on....let me know. My husband and I own a custom paint and restoration shop here in Florida.

I would jump to maybe a 50D and some additional glass.
