On a budget getting a new Camera in the next Week or so. I was originally going to get the Double Zoom Kit, but everyone says, You lose Sharpness when Zoomed in, So I then moved onto the 18-55 Kit. Nice Starter Lens, But for what i want to do, I don't know if it can do it well. I was then Offered to just get the Body & get a Lens. Keep in mind, On a Budget, If i get the Body Only, Ill have Roughly $160 to spend on a Lens. I could do $170 but that's pushing it. Shipping must be Included.

What do i want to Do? Take Pictures as usual, But i'm Setting up a Channel for my Cat on Youtube. So i will be Shooting Video and Pictures. My Approach seeing how my Apartment doesn't have the Best Lighting, is to Blur the Background as much as possible. Not so much in Video. But as far as Pictures goes. I want that Background Blurry. So the Cat stands out Nice.

My guess is the 50mm is my best shot from what I've looked up. I Read up a lot of the Reviews on this Lens, Everyone seems to like it. Even though its cheaply made. It's produces a Really sharp Image. Which is another thing i need.

Any input would be nice and if you have a Better Lens in Mind for the Price range, let me know.

The 50mm prime is considered a portrait lens. The 18-55 will get you a wider shot but you won't get the bokeh you're looking for with it. My first lens was the 50mm and I love it and I'm sure you will too. The bokeh is great! Oh and its a great low light lens.

You can find one used in the forums for around $90.

Every picture in my portfolio was taken with my 50mm 1.8 Mk 1 ;)

Get the kit with the 18-55 and then buy the 50. The 18-55 is really cheap in the kit.

The optics in both the Mk 1 and Mk 2 are the same. The only difference between the 2 is the Mk 1 has the metal mount and distance scale.

The Mk 1 going rate is approx $160, The Mk 2 is going for approx $90. Both used that is, they no longer make the Mk 1 obviously.

I would get the kit lenses and get the 50mm later. The 50mm 1.8 will be roughly the same price months from now. You're going to pay full price on it either way, so I would just save up for it. The 18-55 and 55-250 are great lenses that can be had for a bargain if you bundle them with a camera. If you get the 50mm now, it'll take you longer to save up for the 18-55 and 55-250 since they cost a lot more outside of a kit. I guess it depends how important your cat videos are.

.

and the better focusing ring for manual focus...which would help for video...

what body are you getting?

for what you described the 50mm f1.8 should work out...although you could probably get an 18-55IS, and a M42 mount 50mm f1.4 for video use for $160...

I had a Pentax K-x with 18-55mm on it, So i think i'm going to take a Different approach this time around. The 50mm is Really sharp & Blows out the Background nicely for the Price. The More Pictures & Videos i see, The More i want it. I already have a Tripod, So i should be able to get some Really nice Shots/Video with it. Sharpness & Blowing out the Background is very Important to what i want, But i'm still having an open mind about it. At this point though, I'm definitely leaning towards the 50mm.

Why do you want to spend so much on a higher end camera that you have nothing for lenses? If you have 60D+50mm f1.8 money, get a 550D or 600D (Same sensor and video as 60D) and 18-55, 55-250 and 50mm f1.8. 50mm is a long lens to be your only one.

I'd take a $600 camera and $500 lenses over a $900 camera and $200 worth of lenses any day of the week.

@ tkbslc

Good point. I thought of that, But i think Id rather spend the extra Money on the Better Body. My Checks are Monthly so I rather get the best i can get for the Money Now, than have to wait a Month to get something good. Id rather get the best Now, Than get something even Better a Month from now.

IMO, the 50mm should be in EVERY photographer's bag! The IQ is on par with L series lenses (24-105L f/4 ; 70-200L 2.8 ; 100L) . I own all 3 (well my g/f owns 2 of the 3), but for the price & shooting your cat, get the 50mm!

You can get both for $160. If you're set on the 60D then that's a good way to go :)
