definitely NOT 17-40. Canon 85 1.8 is primarily an outdoor portrait lens. So if that's your thing, go for it and you won't be disappointed.

What are you planning on using the lens for? What current lenses do you have?

What are you planning to shoot? And what other lenses do you already have?

the two lenses you mention are very different to each other, so just asking which you should get doesn't make a whole lot of sense

i would think the EF 17-40mm f/4L would be of more use, as the crop factor would make the 85mm 1.8 long, while the 17mm would be about 35mm, and so on. as far as iq, i think any would suffice, but the edge goes to the 85mm 1.8, tho' not a very fair comparison!

17-40 is basically a landscape lens for full frame cameras in my opinion. The 85mm f/1.8 is a great lens from what I have seen, but on a crop it will be a bit long. Go for the Canon 17-55 IS. I had that for a while back when I had a 60D and it was an awesome walk-around lens. What are you trying to achieve? That's very important as all lenses have their purposes (well almost all).

I currently own EF 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM Lens and EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS that came with my 60D. It just that I get deals on lenses from time to time and I think might as well take advantage of it while that opportunity last.

The 17-5(x) f/2.8 series; pick your poison, is the best possible combination on a crop body camera.

Loyal Cannonista’'s will swear that the additional $400.00(+) they pay over the other third party is worth it; choosing any of the three main players will have you happy for a good long time.

I made up my mind, and i'm going for a wide angle lens, maybe the EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM. It would suit more what I need perspective wise..

the 10-22 is a better fit than the 17-40L

and down the line, the 85 would be a good addition to your set up

you could settle for a tamron or sigma UWA and get the 85mm now too.

when you get more money upgrade the UWA to the canon later

I'd rather go with canon, both EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM and EF 85mm f/1.8 USM is not costing me a lot. Thanks for the advice though, I appreciate all your help!
