Not so long ago I invested in Photoshop 10. To date I've just used it for cropping, sharpening and resizing.

I've taken this shot of my Cocker Monty and would love to get rid of the wall, the bone and the white spots on his nose (food or something) and need some help pointing me in the right direction where to get started.

I've tried using the pen on his nose and smudging but it looks horrible. I've read on here about guys cloning, would that be the answer, if so, how?

I'm not after short circuiting the learning curve, it's that I don't know the terms or where to start.

Many thanks
Simon.

Clone Tool would be the best bet to remove both the spots on the nose and the wall...

Small, tight nearby sample of the nose texture to remove the spots and a larger very soft brush size to sample the grass and cover the wall.

Handsome Pup!

A quick tutorial I found on youTube for you Click Here... (external link)

One of the best tips for someone like yourself, google or youtube. You won't be the first person to ask the question (especially on photoshop), google it or youtube it and you'll get the answers your looking for.

Photoshop Elements is a great "starter" editing program! It's quick to get started in the "basics".

But, as you've seen, there is a lot in there that you don't just automatically learn, you need to apply yourself to some education!

I'd seriously encourage you to pick up a book on PS Elements and work through it! Here are a couple:

In addition, Elements has a large amount of online resources:

Here is my edit.
Photoshop CS6 content aware patch tool to remove the wall and the bone.
magnify the screen and use content aware patch tool to remove the white highlights around the nostrils.
Viveza 2 (plug in) centered on the dog, boost each item slightly particularly warmth and structure.
Flatten the layers
Focus Magic to sharpen by 2 pixels

I took a shot using content aware fill and the spot healing brush for touch-up:

Nice one Bob but I still want to get rid of the bone.

Thanks for all your help. I'll have a go when I have the time and post the finished shot here.

In photoshop i used the clone tool for the wall and bone and the nose. I used the dodge tool to brighten the eyes. Also sharpened it a tad...

To save a lot of grief (and money), groom the dog beforehand. I know its difficult to do that in most circumstances

Couldn't agree more, however, this was impromptu photo that was 'just there' as I was setting up my camera to get shots of birds in my garden.

Since i just got PSE 10 i see it does not have a patch tool or at least i could not find it yet so i used the healing brush and cloning tool around the nose and then did an auto sharpening . Then ahd to save it as a jpeg to post here in a smaller file . Not easy since i'm new to PSE 10 myself . Used the cloning tool for the wall .
