Left my battery on the charger again

I need to get an extension cord for my charger so that I can place the battery and charger right on top of my bag when I charge the battery overnight. This is the second or third time in as many years that I have left the house ready to shoot -- but left the battery on the charger.

My 18th Floor office looks over the Hudson River from the Jersey side -- beautiful view of the NYC skyline. Today is the opening day of Fleet Week in NY and there will be a parade of ships, including tall ships, up the river as well as a Blue Angels Fly Over (and other military aircraft as well).

I've got my camera and lenses, but....

Honestly, as far as shooting opportunities go, if I'm going to miss one because of something stupid, this is the one to miss. I had no expectation of getting something good, only hope. And the truth is, I have a lot of work to get done today and shooting would really only be a distraction.. But I'm still really frustrated with myself.

No point to this post other to vent and possibly serve as a reminder to others.

Fool me once, shame on you battery, fool me twice or more, shame on me.

I've found a good solution for this is to have more than one battery, at least 2: one to keep in the camera/camera bag and one at home/on the charger. Just remember to rotate them and keep them charged! I personally like to have 3 so I have at least one backup with me in the camera bag.

This happened to me before. I had to make a 45 min trip back home to grab it. I usually charge my flash batteries next to my camera battery so that I won't forget them.

I always miss the parade of ships because I work during the day. I hope to get some nice shots taking the ferry back and forth this week.

My solution, which has saved me more than a couple of times. I bought a second charger and leave it and a spare battery at work.

On the plus side (at least in my situation).. the light was horrible all day -- there was a low haze during the parade of ships.

There were probably a dozen tall ships and about 10 modern war ships (from all over, in addition to US, I noticed flags flying from Japan, Canada and Brazil -- there were undoubtedly more).

The Blue angels flew over 5 times, there was another pair of f/18s (that's what I call them) a few Canadian and coast guard jets and a pair of Ospreys.

This guy (and two others) are apparently not sticking around for Fleet Week.

BTW.. I am going to take equach206's advise and get another battery.. Only one will ever be out of the camera or bag at a time. Replacement batteries are a bit cheaper than I thought.

I have two batteries, one always in the camera and one either charging or charged and ready to go. My second battery was only 60 euros and has come in handy multiple times

I just ordered a second battery.. I'm going to do that exactly.

Before leaving the house, I take a picture. That way I know everything is working.

I have six batteries for two cameras.

Or you could move your bag to the power outlet and place the charger ontop of your bag

Ordered a few spare batteries from Sterlingtek myself, no complaints at all. Always 1 charged and 1 in use.

I make it a practice to leave the compartment (battery or card) open if I've removed its contents. It may not be foolproof, but it does make it harder to forget the card/battery. That's in addition to carrying spares.

I actually had considered doing that in the past, but that battery compartment door just looks so fragile when in the open position.

The funny thing about this is, I do the exact same thing (as others have described for batteries) with cards.. I have 4 that I use regularly.. At least 3 are always in the camera or case, only one comes out at a time when copying shots to to the computer.
