How BAD is it to get an L lens (135mm) on a crop body?

Here's the thing, I got a 135mm f/2 L for my 600D and anyone who hears about it says "Holy crap, you got that on a crop body?" - I'm getting good shots out of it but still they're saying "Why?"

And when I say, I'm trying to save up for a FF, I'm getting "Do you really "need" full-frame? Unless you're shooting professional portraits, or massive landscapes that need to have ultra-wide angles?"

I don't upload much but here are some examples of what I'm getting out of a crop body.

So, is there a proper comeback to why I'm not using it on a FF? I'm getting very annoyed :(

Its not a bad thing at all. But it does go a bit against the normal course of events. That lens is a perfect portrait lens on a full frame body, on a crop its still a great lens, but a bit of an awkward length. Its also unusual for someone to add that lens to a rebel body. Usually when you see it on a crop body its on an XXD or 7D body rather than a rebel. If for no other reason than most advanced users prefer the control systems on the "prosumer" bodies. Your shots are great, that said, you would love the FF body.

Is it because you don't own a full frame camera?

They are probably wondering why you are using a tele lens. You can get great portraits with your set up, but you have to step back a good bit to get full length portraits. They are envious of that sweet 135 too. That 135 is 229.5mm on a crop. I would not be able to use that length all the time. If it works for you then awesome! You should check out a 70-200 mm 2.8. You would be in love for portraits!

Who cares!!! If someone told you not to think a certain way, not to work in a certain way because opinion is different. That should be a good enough excuse to break opinion and forge your own path in photography...

You've got a L lens for its quality. I'm sure you have or soon will have other lenses.

Don't let the pressure of not owning a Full Frame camera get to you. The differences in image quality are slight. Yes, you can print bigger photos with FF, but how often do you do that?

Yes, there are differences in erganomics, but all the same functions exist on your 600D, but are just accessed a little differently than on at 5D.

It looks like you're getting really good shots out of the 600D, so I wouldn't worry about spending the money on a 5d unless you've just got the money to spend.

It's not. Those are good shots.

Why is it not good on a crop; because of the focal length? So anyone who has a 70-200 should never shoot past 135 mm or some other arbitrary number? I have a 50D and love my 135 on that camera; use whatever works for you and/or can afford. Same argument for FF vs crop.

I have shot with numerous L lens on my T3i IQ is great..
crop is 1.6.. Just times your focal length by 1.6 and that's what u have.
so really your FOV is 216mm

The proper comeback is that your pictures are better than theirs :p

Thank you guys, I don't have a problem moving back a few steps to take a shot. What I've learnt here from you people is to get better lenses instead of a better camera. I was going to save up and get a 5DII but I spent that money to get this combo instead (upgraded from a 1000D). I didn't wanted to get stuck with a good body and a cheap lens.

It's horrible and you should sell the lens (I'm looking at buying one in two weeks) and buy a 70-200mm. The pictures are great and if you are comfortable with the focal length then that is what matters.

I would agree, just go for it and the heck with what anyone else says or thinks. Kudos to you for getting some L glass, and I cannot imagine that the quality of the L lens will make a difference in your shots, FF or not....

...having said that, I also agree, a 135 is a looooong lens for portrait work on a crop body! I have a 50D and just recently picked up an 85 1.8 for portrait work. I love love love the quality of the lens, but for full body shots, for instance, sometimes I feel like I am awfully far away from the subject (for instance, if someone is holding a reflector for me, I sometimes have to really work hard not to get the reflector in the shot). BUT, if you can make the focal length work for you, then kudos to you and go for it!

My quite modest little gear list: 50D gripped | 135L | 50 1.4 | 50 1.8 | 85 1.8 | 28-105 3.5-4.5 | Speedlite 420EX | 2 Yongnuo 460ii | stands, 2 umbrellas, one softbox

Anyone who says that is a moron. The entry level Canon DSLRs are so much better than the first Pofessional DSLR. It makes no difference what camera body they're on. You could be shooting with a Canon D60 and it still wouldn't matter. A 135L on a 600D is better than a cheap 70-300 on a 5D.

While I didn't buy the 135L until I added a full frame body, I would have loved to have one for my crop body for shooting ice hockey. I just couldn't justify the expense for just that one use. Now, though, I can use it both on a FF for all the things I used the 85mm f/1.8 for on a crop, plus use it on the cropper for ice hockey. :)
