I've used both the mk1 and mk2 and this looks like motion blur to me. But then you change the Aperture and it gets better.

Looking at your exif there's enough light to prevent motion blur so return this ASAP.

Above all, don't lose faith in the nifty fifty. The people who complain about anything but the focus ring and relatively slow AF don't know what they're talking about. You will get great photos from this lens almost every time.

It seems that you have the faith !! But did you try a well damped focus ring on an old manual focus 50mm (an Olympus Zuiko 50mm or M42 Carl Zeiss Jena for example) ?

Nope, I have not. And they will probably be superb.

Honestly, those photos look like the results I started to get after I accidentally drop kicked mine at a wedding. Serious halation.

Bad autofocus motor/components?

I've got that lens and get very crisp results. It's a tad soft wide open, but NOTHING like what you got @ 1.8

I'd exchange it.

Oh wow! Quick thinking ;) Hope it solves your problem.
Think of it as a 100$ lesson learnt on buying lens from overseas ;)

I'm certainly no expert, but what you are getting with your 50/1.8 looks to me like spherical aberration.

Google it and see what you think.

I can't imagine trying to manual focus my 50 1.8 II, there is so much movement in the focus ring that I think focus shifts from hands on to hands off. I have to trust the auto focus and take several shots to get a keeper.

There must be alot of differance between copies because on the 50 1.8 II I had the focus ring was almost too tight! But I suppose there would be a lot of differance if mine isnt a real Canon... but there would be no way of know I guess.... or is there?

Here is a preview of my new 1.4 and my scruffy dog. Not the best pic but the lens is good!
