I just bought this Manfrotto tripod/head combo. Is it worth keeping this head? I am starting to do a little more video....but majority of use for the tripod will be photo. This head seems pretty bulky. The price was great for the combo though (on special for $239.00).

Any thoughts?

At US-dollar pricing, the cost is rather good for just the legset.
The 055XPROB is an extremely solid and durable set of legs,
and is often suggested as a starting point for someone looking for
a 'serious' tripod without entering financial meltdown.
Figure that you got a bonus head thrown into the deal.

Play around with the head operation, and figure out if it suits your
purposes. If it's not as simple or quick to adjust as you prefer, then
you'd do well to consider an eventual replacement.
***Pay attention to the huge range of suggestions which are sure to follow
my comments, then decide if your needs and/or budget can accommodate.***

Quality and cost in the area of tripod heads is all over the known fiscal
spectrum, but it's worth noting that one person's particular preferences
and needs are not what is necessary for each and every other person
to achieve their own desired results.

I've been very happy with what many will consider 'budget' heads, while there
are other heads on the market that cost less than mine, which are even considered
to be a step or three up in quality and features over what I own.

Take it all with a grain of salt:
Read the stickies, do some research, and check them out in person whenever possible.
Compare whenever possible, but ultimately, decide for yourself.

That head is very decent for a pan & tilt. The knobs are a nice size and easy to operate and the arms aren't so long that they are always getting in the way. Overall head movement isn't that smooth when trying to make precise adjustments, but it it is useable.

Brings back HS memories unless you need speed, pan/tilt head is good for many shoots.

I'm with Craig and Mark on this...don't reject it just because it's not the latest or greatest. Give it a good tryout and see if it suits.

From my own personal experience I think I would prefer it to a ball head. I have never owned the very best of the ball heads, but my Manfrotto one was a pain as the tensioner adjustment that is meant to stop the head falling over sideways when you adjust the level is always either too tight or too loose. The longer arms of a pan/tilt head give a bit better control.

Because I use my tripod a lot for macro, landscape and architecture I bought a Manfrotto geared head...it is totally a great piece of equipment for my work.

Growing old disgracefully!
