Those prices are nasty. They are a grand + cheaper in Canada.
And that takes some doing with their normal Screw Canada Pricing :-P

Canon EF 500 F/4L IS II - $8,839.97 CDN (external link)
Canon EF 600 F/4L IS II - $11,389.97 CDN (external link)

Yeah kind of surprising. I was debating a used 500 f4 IS version I. Do I ever wish I knew what would happen with pricing on new and used lenses.

I wonder if the profiles of these lenses are any different than the older models? I was playing around with DPP the other day and wanted to download the 600mm profile but it only had the the 600 II ... which ironically seems to only just have become available. Would the profiles be different or is the optical characteristics pretty much the same?

When Canon announced their first delivery date, I sold my 500 f/4 to fund a new 600 MK II.
After realizing the date was being pushed up to January , then Feb, March, April, May, June, ( You get the idea) I came to my senses and bought a new 500 MK I to replace my old one.
Canon did me a favor by consistently postponing delivery date.
Although these new lenses are an improvement, I can't, for the life of me, understand how these new improvements can justify a near doubling of the price.
I used the extra money to fund a 1D Mark IV to replace my 1D MK IIn.

For $ 13,000.00, I want to either drive it, or fish from it.

Al

Have you ever purchased from Camera Canada? I have family in Canada and if they are reliable I may want to order items for my family through them.

Its only a couple dollars more at Vistek.ca. I have used them before and would not hesitate to use them again.

Yup. I have dealt with them several times. A couple of my friends
have dealt with them as well. Their Brick and Mortor store is called
Forest City Image Centre. And they are authorized dealers.

Start calling a bunch of the smaller shops, and see if someone still has
one sitting in the store. I know Canon Canada is out of stock, and
I checked with 18 different stores in Canada, and a Dozen of the bigger
stores in the US, and none had any left in stock either.

Since I can't justify the price of the new Mark II, I gave up for
now, and grabed a Sigma 120-300 F/2.8 OS for $2799.00 and am
using it with my 2X. Maybe when I win the Lottery I can look
at the Canon again.
