i know there are lots of threads about how great the 5Kmkiii is and everyone that has upgraded has said how much they love it

my question is:

has anyone upgraded from a mkii to a mkiii and thought :

  • dont know what all the fuss was about
  • should have saved my money, kept my mkii and had a nice holiday
  • i regret upgrading

Come on, go shoot some birds! Or go watch some live sports and capture some action! Utilize your fps! And your new 61 AF system! You can also shoot 6400 ISO where the 5D2can only shoot 3200? It's a fast camera, fps and ISO!

i havnt bought one yet...

i have the itch, but the sensible part of me tells me i dont really need one and i can manage on the mkii

the other part really wants one and my addiction to new shiny things is less sensible

If you did make the purchase you will still be asking the same questions.

My opinion is if you don't have the need for the few upgrades in the Mark III then you will be happier with the much cheaper Mark II.

I think that anyone who would have upgraded did so because they saw features that they wanted and so they bought. Are you going to find people with buyers remorse, I guess you will. Like, 'i bought a camera and now I'm broke.. if only...'

but is sounds like you are looking for someone who paid for a new camera but really wished they stuck with their old one. Not me.

I don't think anyone who did upgrade would admit to it anyway if they weren't happy.. People don't like to brag about wasting their money

I seriously doubt however that anyone would be unhappy

THIS

Here is the deal. Image quality b/t the 5D2 and 5D3 are darn close to being the same. Colors might look better to some but not enough to my eye to say yes.

The plus of a 5D3 over a 5D2- Its the AF system you are paying for

1. you have a great AF system that works. All 61 points
2. improved ISO performance- 4000 very usable on a 5D2 questionable
3. shadows are cleaner on the 5D3 than a 5D2.. much more so
4. Plus all the other goodies they put on the camera like dual cards, HDR, Lcd improvement and many of the 7D features that were so popular.

The 5D3 is a steal at its price point

Basically-your getting a 1Ds camera with a better AF system and better ISO performance than the current 1Ds for $3500.00. If that is not enough to motivate you to buy, im not sure what else would make you do so. 6 Mo ago, a 1Ds was selling for $7500.00.

I don't see why anyone would not want to upgrade for a $1200.00 investment. Thats my opinion. Good stuff costs a bit more. Its like comparing an Acura to a Honda

Never had a 5D II but, I did go from a 1DMKIV to a 5DIII. Have not had no regrets of any kind. :)

Please feel free to call me a noob, but I've always wondered about this and have never bothered to ask. The hype about how many points in the AF system-- I came from a Rebel to an xti to a 30D to a 5Dii about 6 months back. I've always had a limited number of AF points... but, I 99% of the time use the center focus point, so that I know where I am focusing every shot and will focus and then frame my shot.

So, I guess the question is, is this the incorrect way to focus for a photo and I've just been focusing wrong for the last 10 years of my photography, or, does the extra points help evaluate other points such as lighting/evaluative metering etc?

Could someone explain this to me?

Back in college I was a photo editor for the daily paper and found myself taking photos of big sports events, which is where I could use AI servo for focusing, and set my focus points to all so help with tracking. Is this the only time that the extra points are useful, if you use all AF points?

Sorry for the noob question.

Akakong, tried shooting your 50mm at f1.4 with focus recompose? Now try with outer AF points on your 5dmk2 and then in low light. You will know why more points and better precision points are so valued.

Bobbyz, I've definitely noticed that with a shallow DOF for sure. But, I also find that if I have all points activated, and say I want to focus on a person's eyes, the camera has no idea thats what i'm looking for, even if the eye is sitting right in front of a focus point.

Is this something thats become more advanced with new AF systems? (I must admit, I have not played with all AF points on with the 5dii much yet.. so I will surely look into it).

Do many people shoot with all points, for most shooting types?

Thanks for your help.

What do you mean "all points?" I have all 61 turned on, but I typically use Single Point AF and move it with the joystick.

To the OP, using focus recompose is not always the greatest. It's refreshing to have outer AF points that actually work in low light. The 5D3 is everything people wanted in the 5D2, plus some more.

I agree with umphotography. You should go rent a 5D3 and see how you like it for a weekend. I think you will not want to put it down, like the rest of us.

I totally agree. The AF is worth the price of upgrade. But it totally depends on what you shoot. I shoot my kids sports, my dogs, parties, etc. Was a hellova lot easier shooting with the 5diii than the 5dii. Lot more keepers. I could see if you mainly shoot landscapes that folks wouldnt really appreciate the updates in the 5diii. So totally depends what you shoot if youll be truly happy.
