Is ISO3200 on 5dmk2 that bad?

amazing pics Scott. That should answer it for everyone in regards to low light scenarios.

The spectra of the light source is what's killing some of you, while allowing others to get clean captures at higher ISO's. If white balance is way off, say that it's shy of blue light, adjusting WB will add even more boost 1? 2? 3 stops more boost? on top of any EV boost you might make in RAW processing. Even if you are shooting JPG, WB is still applied, boosting those light levels, and revealing the noise in a channel that's barely captured any photons.

After seeing these shots, whenever i ask about an upgrade in the forum why do everyone try to convince me that my T2i is a great camera in low light situations? :) Obviously these expensive toys do a better job, 3-4 stops better than my Rebel? Anyway, when i first have the money i'll purchase either one of the D800 or the 5DM3.

this is like school gym low light, maybe a stop and a half lower. Pretty impressive.

come to think of it, that picture is about as low light as this:

my photo had some exposure compensation, so similar lighting. The restaurant was one of those fancy dim dim dimly lit restaurants.

I just recently shot a recital with a 5D3, 70-200 f/2.8 combo. I had been using a 5DC at ISO 1600. The 5D3 will amaze you. For most of the show I was shooting 1/500 or above.

Here are two examples:

1/800, f/2.8, ISO 5000

1/200, f/2.8, ISO 25,600 *There was almost no light for this scene, VERY difficult to even see, much less photograph.

Thanks........now I have to have one..............

I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Here's a 7D ISO 6400 image pushed one stop (so, essentially, it's ISO 12800). 1/13th of a second at f/2.8, which is actually 1/3 of a stop less light than what was in the shot you quoted. White balance is set to 2500K.

And a 100% crop:

IMAGE: http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5442/6933193246_bd42916685_b_d.jpg

When I first pulled this shot into LR3, I thought for sure it was going to fall apart on me in postprocessing. I was amazed at how well it held together, particularly since it was shot in tungsten lighting.

The 100% crop is with 25% luminance NR. If I drop it down to 10%, I get a noise signature nearly identical to that in the shot you quoted. So it doesn't take much to get results from the 7D's ISO 12800 that comes within striking distance of the 5D3's.

Who needs a 5D3 when you can get results like that?

(just kidding, of course, but don't underestimate the camera you have -- it's fantastic)

IDK about school gym low light because this was shot at around maybe 1 am and the only light source is one incandescent bulb behind us (in a garage) where there's no other light source anywhere else except for the flood light which was aiming the opposite way. :)

Even to this day I'm still impressed with its low light capabilities.

Thank you.

I use back button focus, AI Servo, and Case 1: Versatile multi purpose setting. I select my focus point with the joystick and have it set to "Only cross-type AF points" under the selectable AF Point menu.

I threw away very few shots where I wasn't able to focus.

Thanks Scott.

That`s a big help to me. I have my daughter`s graduation ceremony in the near future and I was going to post the question here.

I have the 5D 3 and a 70-200 f4 is , along with a 24-105.

Do you feel flash is a option? or just go for the higher iso?

Terry.

In my experience with low-light dance photography i've found that even if you think the foto has a lot of noise it may print very well. Noticed this on my 40D years ago.

Exactly. Too many of us, myself included, are guilty of judging the quality of photos at 1:1 (100%) on Lightroom or Photoshop when in reality you will never see them that size in print or on screen. :)
