I'm looking for a cheapo travel tripod, and have some trouble finding one that would work with a DSLR. I'm traveling light with 7D/24-105 & 30 siggy combo, as well as 580ex2 (when needed). I've been looking for the gorilla pods, but they seem too small with only a few inches of clearance from the ground. I'd be perfectly fine with 30in height on the other hand.

Currently I have Induro tripod with Adorama F2 ball head

Cheap and lite dont work well on tripods.
But I use a Silk U8000 tripod and a Primos Tall Trigger Stick Monopod
and they do well.

Well I know, I wasn't looking for an expensive carbon fiber tripod, as I already have a decent setup. I was just looking for something like a cheapo Sunpak only smaller in size.

I don't have the Model Number handy, but I have a Slik for about $100 I like a lot that might do you, but look at the specs for weight rating! A small Ball Head was integrated in the design. I bought it about 4 years ago. Decent clips for the leg extensions.

'Cheap' + 'small' = 'less sturdy',
by definition.

Price proportional [Sturdiness * Size * Weight]

Your search will be futile if you do not accept that axiom.

Maybe look at the Slik Sprint Pro II or a Benro Travel angle.

I second the Travel Angel,I love mine.
I am carrying it now where as before this one I just went without one.

Last weekend while camping I used it to mount an iPad to do a time lapse of the Fish Fry Festivities I was attending.
They key for me is to make it small enough that I will always bring it along and strong enough to be useful.
The Benro works on all counts.

How cheap is cheap? I think maybe the least expensive Benro Travel Angel is the A0680T that with a B0 ballhead costs $179 (external link). It folds to 15.7".

I actually have no idea,I rarely buy new too.
I pain $75.00 for mine and it folds to around 12" I think.

I also have a Pro Line cheesy tripod that is surprisingly sturdy for the $30.00 you can get them for brand new.

RRS Pocket Pod will support 98lb and it's only $98.

Use a beanbag. (external link) It's cheap and is rock-solid if you put it on a rock or other unmoving item. Anything else in the price range you're asking for will be heavy, if you want it to be stable.

I carry one in my bag, it's much faster than setting up a tripod if you want a quick shot.

I use a Sony VCT-R100 for the times I need a tripod. Holds my 6+ lbs of gear fine even at 45 angled down. Is it rock solid? No. Buts its dirt cheap ($30) and small (13"-40") and sturdy enough for low light shots and video. May or may not be the platform your looking for based on your shooting. I also carry an Ultrapod 2 for on ground use (though the bean bag idea is great).

No point in using a tripod if it's not rock solid. That's why you spend the money.

I don't see the point in so much money for a tripod, not for someone just shooting for hobby. Sounds like for this shooter, a decent cheap tripod will get the job done...maybe cheap>light>sturdy since he already has a decent setup...

I like to shoot things...sometimes with a camera!
