Which batteries for on camera flash

I am using a Canon Speedlite 430 EXII (Or trying to).
It seems the batteries are continually dead after only taking a half dozen shots then let it set a couple of days of none use.
I am using Energiser 2450's which last forever in a P & S.

Any ideas would be great

Thanks

Jim

If Google led me to the right item, your batteries should be 2450 mAh NiMH batteries. That should provide plenty of power unless they're defective. I use 2000 mAh Sanyo Eneloops and can get a few hundred shots out a set in my 580EXII flash, even when using high speed sync which really draws a lot of power. How old are your batteries? Maybe they're worn out.

I switched to Eneloops from Energizer Bunnies in my 580 EX II and the difference was like night and day. Faster recovery, more shots before recovery slows down. The Eneloops keep flashing, and flashing, and flashing...

I use the Energizers in my 430 EXll and they work quite well. Last a long time in use or not.

As mentioned above maybe yours are shot. Although I have one set that I have been using for more than two years and they still work fine. But from your description something is surely not right.

I would just replace them.

Thanks Guys,

The batteries are not new and perhaps the extra load is using them up more than usual.

Would like to hear more about the Eneloops.

Thanks

Jim

I have heard a lot about Eneloops and I probably would have picked them up if I had read forums before purchasing. I have seen this battery suggested so many times I doubt you will go wrong.

I went to our local ma & pa camera store and they sell Ansmann. They are 2500 mAh NiMH batteries and I can't compare them to Eneloops but my guess is they are just as good. Slow discharge and they just keep firing. I have 3 sets of 2500 mAh NiNH and one 2100 mAh NiNH back up set. I usually use two cameras and two flashes at events. I have yet to have use my 2100 mAh NiNH back up set or open the back up, to the back up :D set of alkaline I keep around. They just keep firing.

A note on the energizer non chargeable style of batteries. The store told me that they do not provide the full power that flash requires or can handle. Can't remember the details as this was a few years ago. I do know alkaline batteries I used had a far slower recycle rate. I did not believe them at first but I can't believe how amazing NiNH rechargeable batteries are. I have saved a ton of money and the environment as well as a little of a dent I have made in that department.

I use powerex 2700mAh's and Imedion 2400mAh's.

The regular powerex's have a little bit more capacity but the imedions are great b/c after AN ENTIRE YEAR of sitting they are still at 85% capacity (very low drain). I usually have the powerex's charged up right before a wedding, and keep the imedions ready for backups.

I used to use NIZN (nickel zinc) which the recycle time was amazing, (youtube them) but I had a few issues with the charger or a single cell dying, so they've been replaced by more imedions. Currently NIZN's have stopped being made until they can fix some internal issues (says the company, yes I called :) )

I also use the powerex smart charger which can recondition and slow charge. I highly recommend it.

I'd read a good bit about and wanted to get the eneloops, but no one carries them anywhere near me, and I needed batteries fast, so I bought a bunch of energizer 2300's. I shot a wedding, left them in the flash for about a month and a half, and then used them in a cave in southern ky, then again at a party and the same 4 are still in my 580EXII. I haven't noticed issues with recycle times, and certainly not with long-lasting ability. Just my $0.02.

Go online to buy eneloops, several places have free shipping and decent prices on them.

Eneloops or Powerex, I have both and they are great, I can get through almost a whole wedding with one set of AAs in my 430EX. Had some Energizers that did end up not holding a charge after a while, although that may have been my charger. I now have the same Powerex that Dan has, and I've had no failed batteries for a while.
