sounds like you need to buy a Pro Shot or G6 with an adaptor for close up lenses instead of a wide angle for your dslr. My guess is you'd be dissapointed though. I took decent macros with an FZ20 and a C70z but not as good as with dslr/macro lens. DOF isnt everything.

Thanks Racketman for the reply
No I don't think I'll be getting a P&S for this- I'm just playing around. I suspect I'll actually be able to do anything I want to try with the kit lens. The shots you get like this are different to a normal macro lens (fairly obviously) as you get much more of the background which seems to make it more recognisable even though it may be just as OOF as a normal macro lens.
Think I've managed to convince myself I don't need to purchase a wide angle lens at the moment as I really would not need it for the macro experiments (too wide) and I really do not do enough shots of that type to make it worthwhile. I still haven't really got to grips with my 200mm F2.8L canon lens yet.
One interesting point about the kit lens though is if I'm shooting in the range f8 to F16 say would I actually notice any quality difference with a more expensive equivalent lens?

I know what you mean re the 200. I bought a 400 on monday and today took it to Kent countryside for a thorough workout (still bugs flying there and I didnt have a macro!). Seemed impossible to handhold without camera shake and all the wild birds fly away as soon as you look at them - not like London birds where a 200 does fine! Too long for tennis so panicked, thinking I wouldn't be able to justify the cost/use ratio, and took it back to Jessops. I now have a 20D staring down at me asking where we are going tomorrow. Have felt need for second body for ages so this was the chance. £748 with cashback. Yeah I know there will be a 10mp 30d with 2.5" screen by Feb but 20/350 have all I need except split prism manual focusing and I dont see Canon adding that feature. 5fps for tennis is a must.

congrats on the 20D- be interested in your comments on it. Think I might get a bad case of camera envy :)
