setting flash with an ND 3 filter

I want to do a time lapse and need to know how to figure out what setting to put in camera for a 580 II with an ND 3 on lens .
I want the shots at night to match the day of a flower opening . 1 shot an hour over at least 3 days .
Is there a way besides trail and error to do this or will the flash just blow out day time shots ?
