Bring your 100-400, as well as your wide lenses. Just watch out for the Elk wondering around
the streets of Banff and Jasper. They may look tame, but they are anything but :-P
I love the drive thru the mountains in the fall. The colours are amazing.
If you are driving from Jasper to Vancouver and have the time, try to stop in Harrison Hot Springs BC
for the night. The Hot Pools at the Harrison Hot Springs Resort are great!

i live just west of calgary, i can't count how many times i have been to the mountains.

If the lenses you have now work for you in England, they will work well here as well. Ultra wides work well for landscapes no matter where you are.
It is very hard to capture the true beauty and size of the mountains in photo's.
The 100- 400 will be perfect for wildlife.
the 28 - 80 will be fine for landscapes

If you really have the desire to buy a new lens, it's hard to go wrong with the 10-22.
A macro is great for the wild flowers as well. Although by August you will have missed the peak for flowers.

But if you are on your honeymoon, i think you may find better things to do than take photographs. : )

if you are renting a car and driving, I can help you plan the most scenic route, Your plan so far looks very good, calgary banff lake louise, jasper, then across to vancouver.
10 days will not be enough, but I am sure you know that.

congrats on your upcoming wedding. hope you have many happy years together

message me if you have any questions about western canada, or if you need any help when you get here. (really!)

Hi

I'm signing my life away in August and getting married, the honeymoon is booked for late August, Calgary -> Banff -> Lake Louise -> Jasper -> Sun Peaks -> Vancouver over 10 nights.

Looking at my signature, will I be left wanting at the wide end, 28mm being the widest? I've borrowed a 17-40 recently and found it great, just not sure I can get away with another purchase!

I went to Banff this winter. 17_40 and 70_200 was working great for me on 5D.
I say, 28-70 and 200 with TC.

Instead of heading back to the same highway after Jasper. Why not add another great stop to your route and include Wells Gray Provincial Park. I believe you will not lose any more mileage by taking this route.

would that not be the right way any how, from jasper on 16 down hwy 5past blue river on ,to (sun peaks) kamloops.

I have never been into Wells Gray, if you are recommending it I am sure that it is a nice place to go. i am going to add that to my list of places to go this summer. thanks.

You are completely correct. I just mentioned it because I think most people just know the TransCanada Hwy. ;) BTW, you are right in warning them about the 10 day time frame. This is really cutting it close.

To the OP, please do Google the area so that you are not surprised with the accommodations.

You are so right, and WISE to confirm that the Yellowhead Hwy (Hwy 16 in Alta, and Hwy 5 in B.C.) is a great route to take. In fact it's BETTER than the Trans-Canada Hwy IMHO. Much less stressful...esp since you don't have to go through Golden, B.C.

I live in Vancouver, and a few years ago I took a brief holiday through Banff, Jasper, Edmonton etc. On my way home, I took the Yellowhead back to B.C.

I left Jasper around 6:00 A.M., and between Jasper, and the B.C./Alberta border I saw 61 elk, 4 black bears, and 17 bighorn sheep.

It truly is a wonderful drive, and much more relaxing to drive than the Trans-Canada Hwy.

Have a great trip!

Dear all!

Thanks for all the replies!
I'll try to sort out a 17-40 before I go, failing that I will have to make do with 28mm.

We wanted more time out there but unfortunately due to the date of the wedding and the start of the Autumn school term (Emily is a teacher) we were restricted to 10 nights, better than nothing though!

Hotels, car and flights are already booked, just a matter of waiting....very much looking forward to it, oh, and the wedding!

We are just back from 10 days in Banff & Jasper. 17-40 would be a great choice, my 17-55 was on most of the time for me. My 70-200 plus a converter was nice for wildlife. We are looking to go back in late September for fall. I would love to find a 100-400 before that trip. I honestly didn't use the 8-16 much, but I hope to more if we hike more in the fall.

Thanks for bringing my thread back to life!

Your 17-55 on a 7D is roughly the same as the 28-80 on my S, maybe that will be ok! I am hoping to borrow a 17-40 for the trip so hopefully I should be covered.
