i say, either the tamron 28-70 or the canon 85mm 1.8.

You already have the 18-55 range covered with the kit, so unless you realy feel the need fot better quality and speed on the kit lens range, then get the prime, a 20d with a 1.8 lens, you will almost never need to use the flash, but you would be limited by the focal length.

sorry if that didnt make sence

30mm, 50mm, 85mm, and some zooms here and there.
All nikon :D

If you are limiting yourself to a single lens, then the 50 f/1.4 gets my vote.

But if you want 2 lenses for just over your budget limitations, then the Tamron 28-75 your are considering & the Canon 50 f/1.8 would make a nice combination

Just returned after many years hiatus from this forum. I was a bit of a prat before, if I ever offended you, I'm sorry

I've got all the equipment I need, now I just need inspiration :D

Another vote for the 85mm/1.8. It's a superb portrait lens with wonderful bokeh.

Using a standard type prime may force me to move around more for the right shot and thus explore the subject more than if I had a zoom. So, I wonder if getting a prime vs a zoom would actually be good for my photography?

Absollutely limiting for me. With a zoom, I start zooming with the lens and not with my feet and it's just wrong from the photographical point of view.

50 1.4. Here are some samples to add to the advertising of this beauty of a lens. One of the best values out there along with the 85 1.8. 85 costs a little more. It has better blur, but the 50 through tests is supposedly sharper. :)

Both are a good pair to own and for around 650, you can have a great combo with the two.

I had only a 50mm lens "back in the day" and used it for 18 years. I really think it helps you learn more about composition. The image quality is pretty good, too! :)

I love my primes and it forces me to do 2 things: zoom with my feet, which makes me know a little more about the subject, and take much better pictures.

Don't know if this would be the right spot and I don't mean to thread hijack, but I too have been looking at the 50mm f/1.4 prime and found a used one for $249. Is that a reasonable price, or should I spring for a brand new one from B&H (my normal photo shopping haunt)?

That's a more than reasonable price if it is a good and clean lens :D

Best regards,

Snap it up! If I had an oppotunity to get that lens for that price (providing it's in good condition) I'd do it in a heartbeat!

If the seller seems like he/she took care of their equipment. If this is off ebay, if the person has a strong rating. Something of that sort.

The lens goes for about 300 new(without shipping tacked on)

Well it's from Adorama and they give it an E grading: Shows normal wear, might have minor scratches, glass clean.

my lesson learned is that the first lens i got after i got my camera should have been the:
1) Canon 28mm f/1.8, $400
But instead it was the 50 1.8. Getting the 50 was not a BAD choice, it's a great lens. But for me the 28 would have been a better, more imporant purchase, with such a limited amount of lenses. I think If I had to pick one prime to survive on, it would be something around the 20-30mm range and fast, either the 24 or the 28mm. The 50 is just a tad too long for the shots that I knew were now possible with a fast lens. Be carefull. the 80 dollar 50mm 1.8 will be the most expensive lens you ever buy. It's cost me thousands so far....

Oh if it used from a place like B&H and Adorama, yeah, then go for it.
