Scott Kelby shoots Ice Hockey

Don't think this has been posted before, it was a good read. Shooting hockey at ISO 640!! Most can only dream...

Exactly, in fact it just shows that he wasn't prepared and gave Southcreek a bunch of worthless images.

Well lets be honest, Kelby isn't really the greatest photographer in the first place.

So if you take bad shots, all you have to do is say they are bad, and everyone will think they are good?

This would all be fine if he was there as an assistant, but to be there on assignment for a wire and then posting something like that, is truly unprofessional in my opinion.

hahaha I hope this is real, no way to actually know I guess. Either way, I'm down to play, and I'm not even going to TOUCH the implied statement that Kelby's photos are automatically better because they include NFL shots, that's just ridiculous.

1) Nice capture, standard fumble shot, too much dead space on the left though, no point.

2) Nothing special, eye-level shot of player introductions. You and every other photog there got this shot (though some of them had better angles).

3) Nice stock capture but nothing terribly compelling going on. Awkward dead space again.

4) No face, yeah its Aaron Rogers but its mostly just a big yellow butt.

5) Nice light and detail but it's just a sideline player clapping.

6) Nothing special, you can shoot 50 of these any given game, especially of Peyton because he does this all the time.

7) Worst photo so far. Cheap looking effect, poorly framed, no story.

8) I like this, nice tight detail, I might have cropped differently but it's a good photo.

9) Huh? I don't understand this crop and its not a very good moment.

10) Another pre-game shot but this is a nice moment, isolated player, I dig the black and white.

11) Nothing special, poor angle on a sack.

12) Pre-game butt shot.

13) Like the idea, like the lines.

14) Meh, this is ok, a bit more of moment but not much.

15) Fisheye, 'nuff said.

16) Bad angle.

17) I almost like this but the angle is poor and its too busy.

18) Like the face on this.

19) Generic stadium shot.

20) Busy, too much going on.

21) Bad angle on the play.

22) Nice emotion, could use a better crop.

23) Like the moment, I would have cropped off all the useless stuff on the right.

24) Introductions again, nothing special happening.

25) YAP (yet another pre-game).

26) Decent stock piece but that's about it.

Phew, so there we have it. 26 photos of (more or less) mediocrity. And that was just the football album, way too many images for a "portfolio".

The wire service knew in advance that I had never shot a hockey game (I warned them up front) and they asked me to do it anyway since everyone has a first game of shooting every sport. I share all my experiences shooting on my blog, even the bad ones, as a learning tool, and you can see from the comments it was appreciated.

My question to you is: why would you spend your time on forums criticizing other photographers? Does it make you feel better about your own photography?

Ahhh... yes Southcreek.

Don't think I ever criticized your work. You said yourself that the images you sent to Southcreek were crap. Just said it was rather unprofessional to blog about being unprepared.
