Hey guys, I'm doing a little research on the sigma and I come across two names for it and was hoping a few of you can discern which one is the lens that is getting the good reviews by the users of the lens here.

Sigma Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto 24-70mm f/2.8 EX Aspherical DF Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS

Or

Sigma Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro DF Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS

I don't know whether or not they both have macro and one title has substituted "aspherical" instead of "DG Macro" or if they are really the same. I found the two names on a search at techbargains.com. Are they one and the same lens?

Go to pricegrabber.com and type in "548101". That's the one you want [EX DG Macro]. Spec-wise they are both the same, but the newer version has some digital coatings and a few cosmetic changes.

fstopjojo,

I just recieved it today "EX DG Macro" version, has not been able to play with it yet. However, I read some threads on this forum regarding the lense being soft front focus when open wide at f2.8 at 24mm. How can I tell if my lense isn't the "faulty one"? Thanks a bunch.

Sigma's APS-C line are designated DC. The 24-70 DG is FF.

Softness and front focus are not the same thing. A lens can be very sharp but can also be misfocusing. OTOH, a lens can focus properly but demonstrate softness. I would say for the 2470EX you just got, just take it out and shoot a lot with it. Many users who complain or begin getting paralyzed about their lens having problems (not saying this of you) are new to photography (or just don't understand DOF, etc.) and just worry because someone else worried or complained. My recommendation is simply assume a good copy, go shoot outside where the AF is more accurate (with lots of light), fire off shots wide open to f8, realize most lenses get sharper stopped down 1 or 2 stops, take 500 frames, etc etc. You'll know if something is wrong. Otherwise, enjoy and snap some good ones.

Is anyone aware of any reputable camera stores in southern california in the l.a., riverside, san bernardino or orange counties that sell sigmas for a good price, perhaps along the lines of sigmaforless.com?

Yes, the old one doesn't have Macro stamped to the name.
