great captures! the MP-E is my only macro lens and I love it :) as for the issue you are having with the background, it depends on your F stop and lowering your flash sink speed

Nice shots.

I have sold my motorbike and just ordered the MP-E 65 using some of the proceeds. I can't wait to try it out. I will be pleased if my first shots are as good as yours.

Great start. One way around the black background is to use it on a tripod. Natural-light shots with the MP-E look awesome, but they require some planning, so you don't see people doing them as often. Another strategy is to set up your diffuser so that the flash hits the background without being diffused despite full diffusion on the subject. This is tricky, because you need to manage the light output on the background and subject carefully, and the background can still be too far away to avoid being black. Ultimately, I think the best solution for flash photography is just to be really careful about what's in the background when composing the shot, and put something back there fairly close to the subject when it's clear that the background is too far away.
