exactly my point...why the need to shoot that low ss.

Well why the need to shoot with a higher SS, or a higher ISO? As long as his technique is good there are no disadvantages to shooting at slower SS's.

he was probably testing out the VR

This, most likely.

200 mm should be at least SS of 1/200, even with IS help maybe 125...why 1/80? iso could easily go 320 0r 400.

I have steady hands Tony. Why not? ;) I could shoot 1/15 SS with IS/VR.

If you can show me your lowest SS handheld, I'd like to see it. :)

my question was- what do you gain with the lower shutter speed? yes steady hands come into play when you are shooting at slow speed as you say 1/15 and/or long focal length, like 400 mm :-)

Here's another sample, Tony.

This was shot with the 24 L MK II @ f4.5, SS 1/20, ISO 400. This lens has no IS of any type. :)

Here's another one. Same lens as above. Canon 24 L MK II @ f/5, SS 1/20, ISO 400. I think the image has some movement to give it an effect.:)

I can understand going very low shutter speeds and taking advantage of IS when I needed to shoot under very low lights with high iso settings or if I am trying to use high F stop to increase the depth of field. other than that I try to be close to 1/focal length or a stop under.

Does that mean I don't know what I'm doing?:p It works for what I do. ;)

One more. Shot with the 16-35 II @ f8, SS 1/3, ISO 200. :) Being NYC and all, it gives a sense of hustle and bustle that is characteristic of this place.
