The flower looks good but one critique, try to shoot wide open if possible (add a ND or CPL if needed). The specular highlights in the back don't look good when they are not round.

Had one but sold it, wasn't too happy with it. Yes it's sharp, but all my lenses are sharp. My problem was its focussing - would hunt incessantly and I was not sold on its colour which usually would look like like white balance was out. Now have the 100mm Macro IS. But having said that, it is worth the price despite its failings.
That sounds odd. Maybe you had a weird copy. The 50mm f/2.5 macro is a very sharp lens indeed. It's one of the sharpest I own. The color is also amazing too. In low light or low-contrast surfaces it can hunt a little bit but using the center AF point usually lets it snap right to the item. My biggest complaint with the lens it is SLOOOW to focus and is very noisy.
The lens can be used for both close-up (it is not really a macro lens unless you get the life-size converter) and normal photography. I've even used it for portrait work and it does well.
Here are two shots with the 50mm f/2.5 macro. Both are right from RAW, no color correction. Slight s-curve.
