This may be a silly question, but I have spent an hour trying to figure out how to do this.

I used Photo Mechanic for the first time last night and loved the speed. I already had the photos on my PC so I didnt Injest, I just found them in their folder through PM. I then rated them with stars 1-5, filtered out all of my 1 stars, then created a sub folder inside the folder my photos are in, and dragged all of the non-1star photos in Photo Mechanic into that folder. I then imported all the photos from that folder into Lightroom using Lightroom's import dialog.

My question is, what step am I missing that allows the star ratings to be embedded into the RAW files so that I can then use them in Lightroom?

Have you tried contacting Photo Mechanic support?

I've found them to be quick & knowledgable.

This in explained in quite some detail on pages 21-22 of the Photo Mechanic User Guide (external link).

The Star Ratings work immediately between apps as long as, in Preferences/Files, the option is set to:
Add tag, color class, and rating to IPTC/XMP: For all photos

The ratings cannot be embedded directly into raw files; PM will create XMP sidecar files which will be read by Lightroom.

Thanks guys, since that option is set by default i would have thought it would have worked. I'll check it out again later and see if i'm missing something. Thanks.

Have you tried using the "Read Metadata from File" command?

Lightroom.

Library module, select the images you want, go Metadata > Read Metadata from file.

Do not do this for images that you already edited in LR, or you will revert the edit to how the image was imported.
