This one (external link). It's a bit more expensive though. The Canon 100-300 has a good reputation for a budget lens. I think there's a new Canon something like 70-300 F4L which might be good.

70-300 f/4L? I'd definitely use one of those.

Sigma already makes a 100-300 f/4. Not the most popular lens, but I've only heard good about it.

The Sigma 100-300 f4 is indeed a superb lens. The OP asked about the Canon rival to the 70-300 APO DG tho' which is in a lower class entirely. As mentioned the 100-300 USM is the most direct competitor but is also, at least in the UK, rather more expensive. Better motor but that's where it ends. The Sigma seems to be the only longer lens worth having below the 70-20 f4 or Sigma 100-300 f4 class.

Well said Condyk, I have to agree. The Sigma 100-300 f4 isn't even the same ball park but it's a cracker. The Sigma 70-300 APO is a great lens for the money and pretty hard to beat the bang for buck. No USM or FTMF but you get the 1:2 ratio macro and over here in Australia the EF 100-300 USM is twice the price of the Sigma.
