Printing a photo from a negative?

I was thinking of getting a wedding photo printed and framed (large size). The photos are on negatives, not digital. My question is (hopefully this isn't a stupid question), will the outcome be the same no matter where I take it? If not, does anyone have any recomendations for a good photo place in Manhattan?
There's a photo place across the street from where I work, this would be convenient. However, if I'm going to do this once, I don't mind taking a train or taxi somewhere to get it done. I'm in NYC so Adorama or B&H (not even sure if they do this) isn't far.

Thanks in adavnce.

Not all results will be the same. I would think Adorama would be a good place to go as they have a well regarding processing service, but I have no direct experience. Ask whether they will be making a photographic print, or whether they will be scanning the negative and making a digital print from the scanned negative. Is this a black and white or color negative?

Typically software in film scanners has conversion of negative image into a positive, with correction of the orange color in the negative. Different film manufacturers use different orange, so the software needs to be able to correct regardless of the differences in orange. Commercial services that turn negatives into digital files have been around for many years now, so this is not likely to be a source of error.

We have discussed poor printing results obtained by POTN members, particularly when the print making machine is allowed to 'auto correct' rather than print the image as provided in the digital file. So your second issue to contend with is digital printing quality...regardless if you provide a digital file, or they scan a neg to create the digital file.

It's most likely going to be a color negative, depending on which photo we deceide on.
I'm assuming a photographic print is the preferred way?

Thanks

There are benefits to each. Scanning would likely allow you a larger print. If you want any sort of retouching its easier with digital technology. Talk it over with whichever lab you choose.

It depends! Before I bought a digital SLR, I shot on film and had the lab provide me with a CD full of digital files made from the negs, as well a prints. I did that on more than one occasion, using different labs to assess the result. Result of digital file was very low res from one, low res (1.5MPixel image) from the other!

Adorama no longer processes photos from negatives.

Also found this buried on thier web site:
Do you process negatives or slides?
No. Due to declining demand for such services, we have discontinued them. Our photo lab is now completely digitized.

I guess my project after getting this photo enlargment printed is to find a place to scan all my negatives from our wedding. Perhaps I'll look into that on-line service i came across one of these boards.

Of course it would depend on the scan quality, but if done properly the potential for better results in a larger print are there.

I would very intensely interrogate the lab that the work is sent to. In the case of my puny 1.5 MPixel files, they came from Fuji Labs, not some schlock local outfit! The schlock local outfit was even poorer in resolution.
