Lots of good stuff for you to look at; give yourself some time to view all this. Here's what I've just posted today...

wow, I have a new respect for the Canon 100-400L. Did you feel the push/pull design of the 100-400 was cumbersome ?

Thanks for the test.

In all honesty, when the lenses arrived, of the 5, the one I least wanted to like (prima facie) was the 100-400 for its push/pull; I've always been a twister. But with time and viewing results, it came down to the 400 and 100-400 for me. Both have "pop" and sharpness at 400mm (and beyond) that none of the others really could match. At day's end, the 100-400 remains standing and is the one I've kept (along with my 70-200IS). I'm quickly getting used to the p/p design though.

Thanks for your effort to put these tests together! I have chosen the 100-400 for its versatility anyway, but good to know that it performs relatively good in comparison to some other candidates.

Still considering what 1.4 tc to get. I know Kenko's pro and regular one both perform well, and heard that Tamron one runs well too.

These are great Jojo! Thanks once again. I always enjoy looking at your lens tests, I feel you give a very representative view of what a particular lens is capable of in skilled hands. Congrats on your 100-400, glad you are pleased with it. The performance of the Kenko TC in combination with the 100-400 definately looks good to me.

David, I can certainly see why. It really is a lovely lens. How do you like its performance with a 1.4x?

It works well with the 1.4x in terms of image quality. The autofocus slows down considerably, and it hunts in low light.

awesome close focus on the 300, with or without the TC. with the TC it's a terrific butterfly hunter.

The big factor for me was I just couldn't see having a max aperature of 5.6 -- the 300 at f4 takes just beautiful photos.

I want to take another opportunity to thank you for your lens tests. I like your real-world approach, and the quality of your work.

I just don't care for push-pull zooms. Thank goodness I don't feel the need for one anymore.

Certainly using the focus limiter is helpful, which I'm sure you do. As for the lens itself, if I was mostly using the 300mm range, I probably would have opted for it. It left a very favorable impression on me in all aspects of lens refinement.

Great tests. Really appreciated that you spent time doing all this.

Next in line, Wide lenses, sigma 12-24/Tokina 12-24/Tamron 11-18 and Canon 10-22 :D

I'm glad to see you concur with my experience of the 17-40 and 17-85... I had the 17-40 first, and when I bought the 17-85 to test it, I could hardly find anything to separate them optically. The 17-40 does have the advantage on build quality though...

Even so, my 17-40 is up for sale now...

5D, 24-70L, 17-40L, 85 f/1.8, 420EX, various other toys...

I want to die peacefully in my sleep like my grandfather. Not screaming in terror like his passengers.
