It only took two years of the cable coming loose from the left side port of my 5D2 and 7D, just when I had the perfect shot. The shutter would not fire as a result. I had bought a couple of cables from HK in the past, all had the same problem. I've heard that the Canon cable has the same issue.

I posted about it a week ago and a couple guys said, 'yeah, these are all bad cables, doesn't matter whether it's a Canon or a Chinese knockoff, and they're probably made in the same factory '. I was very frustrated, but based on good reviews on B&H, I took a chance and bought a couple of the Vello releases (external link) there.

They are perfect. They fit so tight, you have to give them a little pull to release them. The reason is in the photo below.

The length of the male connectors to the camera pins, the first part of the connector seen facing one another, looks a little longer on the loose cable on the left, compared to the Vello cable on the right.

However, the difference is because of the length of the collar of the connector which holds it in the port. On the left with the red arrow, you'll notice it's only about a 16th of an inch wide on the bad cable. On the Vello with the blue arrow, it's about a quarter inch. That extra length holds it tight. The actual pin connector is also a bit longer on the Vello, to accomodate the wider collar.

$7.50 at B&H. The Canon is about $40.

Also will post this on the "coolest accessories" thread.

Wow, perfect timing. I finally decided to buy a cable release for my 5D2 and was looking at non-Canon options last night, so this report and recommendation couldn't be more timely. Thank you!

I own a wired Vello and a wireless Vello Freewave Plus. Both are excellent products, especially for the price, however, there is one minor issue that everyone should be aware of.

The longer collar on the Vello (look at the blue arrow in Jay's original post) causes the shutter release to extend a little further out than the shorter one. If you use a RRS L bracket on at the 7D, then you will have to slide the L bracket to the left in order to shoot in portrait orientation on your tripod. I simply slid my L bracket to the left by about 1/4 to 1/3 of an inch and I've kept it there ever since. This makes the camera feel a little bigger since the L bracket is extended out to the side. It's not too big of a deal and I've gotten used to it, but it is something to consider.

In spite of that minor issue, the Vello shutter releases are very inexpensive and built really well. I highly recommend them, as long as you don't mind having to slide your L plate over a little bit.

I've done as you have with the bracket, moved it out and left it in that location. For me, it's easier than having to remember to take the hex wrench with me, or to curse that I forgot it!

Victorinox Swiss Army Cybertool. It includes just the right size hex bit for your RRS bracket, along with those other essential tools the bottle opener and corkscrew. I understand it has a knife blade as well :{)#

I've only used the Canon Timer Remote Controller TC-80N3 for the past 4 years and it still fits super tight. In fact I have a hard time pulling it out. I use it a couple times a week.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

Vello is HK. I'm sure some camera shop or Amazon has it over there.

Just got mine. A much better fit than whatever Chinese one I had, a nice snug fit. I like the packaging too.

Have been happily using my Vello wired cable release since early June thanks to the OP's recommendation. Good fit, works well.

My review -- I've had my Vello since March 2012, bought from B&H, and it got a lot of use. The connector would not always stay in the socket on either my 7D or the 5DII, many times even pulled out in landscape mode. While in portrait mode the connector would sometimes slip out. Not fun when working in the dark shooting star trails or the Milky Way. Anyway, my cable release eventually broke last night -- there's a break in the wire on the thicker grooved rubber area that connects outside the handset. Press the shutter release, nothing - but if I wiggle the wire at that section then it triggers the shutter. Problem repeats consistently. I removed the two screws to open and see if possibly the wires came loose internally but that wasn't the case.

Hmm, I've been using one I bought from Adorama 4 years ago and still tight. Then again, it's a wireless unit, so once it's on it doesn, t get moved unless I chance the camera orientation.

I bought a Pixel brand from Amazon for less than $8.00, connector fits the socket very tight, it's the same length as the Vello --
