If it's local, i'll go ahead and do it. If it's anything internet wise, i wouldn't bother. You might end up regretting it if anything goes sour..

Disagree. If you buy on Ebay and it goes sour, you're protected and you will get refunded (happened to me). If you buy off Craigslist and you bring it home and its bad, goodbye money!

That would be kinda stupid, if you brought it home and and it's broken then you didn't really pay attention while testing.

Test it out, if all is good, BUY!! :D

I wouldn't be surprised if it is worth that much for parts only. Immediately meet in a crowded public place and buy if it is in acceptable condition! If any sort of online payment/shipping involved, pretty much guaranteed to get scammed

For $1800.00 I would be willing to fly down for the weekend and buy it in person.
What the hell. I could use a weekend in Miami. Or almost any other place in
North America or Western Europe :-P

But if it's an over the net sale, I would run very, very, very far away.

Sounds too ridiculously good too be true.

If it's a local sale from Craigslist or whatever, I'd only meet in a very safe place... such as a busy bank lobby or inside a coffee shop. Do not go to a residence or parking lot or anywhere else risky with $1800 cash in your pocket!

I'd much rather buy locally and have the opportunity to check out gear thoroughly myself, before handing over my money. Take a small flash light to look inside the lens for fungus. Also take your camera and take some shots with it.

I'd also be asking if the seller has a nice, heavy duty tripod. It's almost a necessity with a 600mm. Or at least a monopod. Might get a good deal on that too, if you don't already have one.

Geez, if it is a local and cash deal, meet in a populated public place, bring a body to test it out, and go for it. If you don't really want a 600mm, I do, take a trip down the road to the Keys and I will give you $3k for it.

Me personally, it is Miami, so I would be catious of a too good to be true scenario. I have seen multiple craiglist listings in the Miami area selling from different locations at different prices using the same images, which is either stealing someone elses photo, misrepresenting the product for sale, or a scam.

When my 200-400 f/4 lens ($7k) was stolen during a home break in I found the lens on craigslist - had the serial number in pictures - for $2500. Somebody in LA bought my stolen lens and got a "good deal", probably went online and told all their friends what a great deal they got.

Have fun with your stolen lens or some other brilliant scam.

As a side note, if for whatever reason my old lens checks in (with it's serial number) during service or being sold at a pawn shop, Mr. Good Deal is facing grand theft. If we (I mean you guys) refuse to buy obviously stolen lenses, there would be no demand, then there wouldn't be people like me repurchasing very expensive lenses.

Why didn't you set up a meet with the seller on CL and get the local PD involved? Then you would have had at least their email, which means their name, possibly a phone number, PD can get an address...
