When my 200-400 f/4 lens ($7k) was stolen during a home break in I found the lens on craigslist - had the serial number in pictures - for $2500. Somebody in LA bought my stolen lens and got a "good deal", probably went online and told all their friends what a great deal they got.

Have fun with your stolen lens or some other brilliant scam.

As a side note, if for whatever reason my old lens checks in (with it's serial number) during service or being sold at a pawn shop, Mr. Good Deal is facing grand theft. If we (I mean you guys) refuse to buy obviously stolen lenses, there would be no demand, then there wouldn't be people like me repurchasing very expensive lenses.

No they aren't, you'd have to prove they stole it or knew it was stolen. GL with that. They do however lose the lens and it goes back to the rightful owner.

I always ask for receipts even with CL stuff, its the best way to discourage stolen resales.

You can still be charged with buying/receiving or possessing stolen goods... if the cops want to be pr!cks. ;)

And you can fight it, again they'd have to show intent and knowledge.

One lens isn't gonna do that when you can show some sort of communication from a "seller" unless he specifically told you its stolen.

Now... if you happen to have a whole bunch of the stuff... then that may be different and even then, how do you think Pawn Shops stay alive?

In my country you are guilty if you payed way less than the actual 2nd hand market value and it turns out it is stolen. If you paid a fair price and it turns out it is stolen the product is rightfully yours.

And who determines what the 2nd hand market value is?

Also, since you don't actually specify saying "my country" is kinda open ended, i'd like to know what country in this context....

Netherlands, I was in this situation once. I bought a videocard on a 2nd hand website, paid $200 for it while it was $280 in store. Turned out it was stolen so the police called me (i called the seller so my number was in his phone, cops had the phone so i was a suspect) I did my story with all the email correspondations between seller and me. Later i got a letter that my status in this case changed from suspect to witness. I kept my videocard becasue the police determined there was no way i could have known it was stolen, the card came with the origional box and all accessories.

So was this thread a hoax, or if not, what the heck happened with the lens?

Enquiring minds want to know.

Hey all, sorry I forgot about the tread,I called the guy to make an appointment to check on the lens, and they happen to be stolen, the guy had no receipts or any proof that the lens where his, I asked him over the phone, then he set up the meeting at a Starbucks to do the transaction, so I decided to call off the deal. Sorry didn't reply before

Thanks for the update! Glad you opted put, and chose not to get into that tangled web. As we're all photo-enthusiasts, and knowing (or even just imagining) how much that must hurt to have your gear stolen.. i hope they catch the thief!!! ;)
