I have the Jessops 360 for my 60d, and noticed it was not ETTL'ing on the hot shoe.

I took it back and it worked on a jessops 60D. I then looked around and went to a shop and tried a 430 and 550, both worked.

I went home and tried an ETTL cable, it works perfectly, but still not on the Hot Shoe.

Can this be the Hot Shoe? as it works with a cable, and both a new 430 and a 550.

If it is the Shoe, any idea of a fix or cost to repair, this is not in warranty as far as i know as i got it from a "pawn shop." With no paperwork avaliable.

Very strange, because the ETTL cable is just an extension of the hotshoe. I would suspect some sort of a contact issue. It must be one of the contacts on either the camera hotshoe or the flash foot(or both?) that is just slightly wonky.

Have you tried to clean both?

What does the flash display when in the hotshoe?

Thanks for the reply, have played all day/night now...............

The flash displays all it should do, however it is not compatible with on camera settings.

The Flash ETTL's almost on the camera some highlights blown some not, this could be user error, i don't know.

It now does not work on the cable,

If i change to manual i get Error 20, turn off camera message.

Any ideas now, anybody

How is it not compatible? More info is needed...

Almost on the camera? What does this mean?

Do you mean the camera or flash in manual mode?

Any ideas now, anybody

Now it seems to be behaving like you have a poor set of batteries, or possibly corroded/dirty battery contacts. If it is not the batteries, try another camera again.

1. The batteries are brand new duracell.
2. I cannot change the on board camera settings, comes up with not enough power or incompatible flash. This has always been the same, 3rd party combatibility i imagine.
3. The ETTL light comes on, the motor focus's all the correct settings on the flash. ISO/Focal Length etc. But some good pictures in darker areas some blown out in lighter areas. But on board works great. This is why i said could be user error.
4. I get the error 20 when the flash is in manual.

Update, i tried the external flash function setting, that works, all there ETTLii etc, tried a few shots with EXP COMP seemed to make a massive diffence in light areas.
Still saysn error 20 when i switch the flash to manual.
Seems ETTL is working to some degree, what i don't know.
Will get a 430/550/580 sometime or if it is hot shoe a canon fix.
Just worried about Error 20 in manual.

The battery contacts could still be the problem. Or an intermittent problem. Especially if someone left an old set of batteries in place too long. (corrosion)

Some 3rd party flashes are fully compatible with the Canon menu system. (Yongnuo). Others will display some menu items, while other menu items are "greyed out". It is also common for a 3rd party flash to display "This menu cannot be displayed. Incompatible flash or flash's power is turned off".

Canon Error 20 is "Malfunction related to the mechanical mechanism has been detected"
Seems strange to get that just because you have the Flash in manual mode, but a quick Google search shows that other 3rd party flash users report the same problem. http://www.flickr.com …iscuss/72157625999362215/ (external link)

Just tightened the ring on the flash and it worked in manual but not ETTL. Applied the nut gently ETTL worked, Error 20 in manual.

Must be Hotshoe/terminal contact issue, though ETTL cable still not working. Has to be Flash or hotshoe contact issue.

Ps thanks for the pointers
